Evaluate My Photographs

Featured Replies

The Chiang Mai Photographic Group is having an exhibition next month. These will be a couple of my entries for a section called Faces of Asia - just thought I'd get a bit of feedback from this forum. By the way, you can see the current state of the shortlist on our website.

The DOF on the first (man) shot is too shallow and has left the foreground (right side and front of face) out of focus. I also think the perspiration is unattractive and not in keeping with the "cool" image. The "view" reflection in the sunglasses is inappropriate also. I don't think this image has worked out too well.

The second shot is a lot better and a lot more technically accurate (thats what camera clubs seek eh?). However, I find the "zit" on her chin too focused and it would look better to clone it out. This will then open up the image and prove beneficial. Also clone out the black spec on her tooth. There's an ugly "blurring/smudge" on her forehead between her eyebrows which degrades the image however. Not sure where this came from.

Sorry to be so critical but I've been a member of these camera clubs in the past and I know how critical the judging is!

Nevertheless, good luck in your submissions

Thanks for your input Vulcan.

I have to disagree about the image of the man - I like it a lot but as it didn't make the final selection for our exhibition clearly not everyone felt the same way. Not sure what you meant about the reflection in his glasses being "inappropriate" though - that's the way it was when I shot it!

BTW the blurry bit on the woman's face must have been a scar I think - the shots either side don't have any trace of it. I cloned her rather prominent mole out for a poster but left it in on the print. No logic there I know!

BTW, the Chiang Mai Photographic Group's first exhibition opens on November 1st and anyone from this forum is very welcome to come. Since there's a Thai Visa party here on the 8th you could combine the two :o .

Looking at your website the woman looks a lot better in colour - very nice shot.

Good looking site as well, congratulations.

You seem a very well organised and active area - wish I lived up there.

Maybe this forum could take some inspiration from yours :o It's beginning to die on its feet!

Not much point in posting images here these days.

Like many of these things, after those of us who are focussed (some might say obsessive) on making images there is quite a steep drop off in the amount of participation by the general membership, some of whom even have lives away from the shutter release and computer (no, really). Our site lacks the critical mass of posters to keep the discussion board er....discussing things, but apart from that it's got a lot of good useful info on the front page with the newsfeeds and all. It's useful that we're all able to meet regularly but since many people are passing through or are snowbirds that presents its own set of challenges. You're welcome to join, by the way. The exhibition is shaping up well and I have high hopes that it will bring more members on board.

How strict is your membership criteria ref "living around or visiting CM"? I don't see myself getting up there too frequently - or is Hua Hin "around CM"?

Well you know the problems with running anything aimed at expats - people come, people go, they go and come back etc etc.... Please feel free to join the website and take part in online activities but full membership (not that it brings any specific benefits) is obviously for those who can make it to meetings from time to time.

First of all, I don't know anything about photography.

But I like your photos anyway. I am less concerned about technical stuff, what I find compelling is emotional content, whatever that means. Maybe it is just seeing a flash of the subject's personality or something that evokes a memory? ? ?

JMHO.
