Nai Harn Drowning

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any information in regards to the young Thai man who drowned at Nai Harn beach on Saturday afternoon? I watched them pull his body out of the water, and I have been trying to find an obituary and/or information and so far I've been unsuccessful. If you have any information, I'd appreciate it.

Hi amyb,

sorry I do not have info but only saw the tourist rescue vehicle and police truck responding.

Can you tell me, did anyone actually swim out or paddle a board out to help? Did you see that or just the body? Washed off the rocks or for sure a beach swimmer?

Lately the guys that run the chairs have been doubling as "lifeguards" with the orange shirts. I know for a fact a couple of them cannot swim, what a joke.

huggy, this is what i saw...

there were four thai guys playing in the waves. early twenties i am guessing. a few big waves came and then there were only three. one of his friends ran to the lifeguard tower but the guys in the orange shirts (i am assuming the guys who tend to the chairs and the drinks) grabbed some flotation devices and put on snorkel masks and fins and hit the water. it took the actual lifeguard quite awhile to get from his tower to the water. anyways, by this point, there were like four or five orange-shirted guys looking for him. and they looked and looked and looked and i kept glancing at my watch...they pulled him out nearly an hour later quite close to the spot where he first went under. his body did not resurface.

as they pulled him to shore, of course a huge crowd of mostly tourists gathered around. i saw the guy who found him and two others who had been looking check his pulse, shake their head, pick him up and run the body to the rescue vehicle that was waiting. i followed with the victim's shoes and shirt because their stuff was close to mine.

when i got back to my spot, the guy who found his body was walking back to his stand, and a bunch of tourists started screaming at him about not doing cpr. he screamed back in thai, and then he screamed back in english something like, "one hour already."

it's all quite sad really, and i haven't been able to find anything online as to his drowning. you and me must cross paths alot, hb.

Hi AmyB,

What time did this happen at? I was down there with some family on Saturday afternoon for a walk at around 3-3.30pm. On leaving I met a group of Thai lads of whom I knew a few in the car park and was chatting to them. It looked like they were leaving but am just a little worried. Any info regarding the time would be great.

Such a sad story. Am glad I didn't take my relatives out for a swim. Are the waters still quite bad down that way for swimming? I only noticed 2 red flags at the opposite end from the Le Meridien.

Cheers,

EmuBob

Terrible..........

amyb, I typically hang out at the other end toward the lagoon, please feel free to step up and say hi, usually on the sand with towel reading, I wear a bucket type hat.

It was about a month ago when the same exact thing happened at that end. Four Thais, pretending they could swim, they try freestyle with their arms flailing striaght up, heads out of the water, one kid completely caught in an outbound current. I swam over and asked one of the guys surfing to help me out, got to the guy with board and got him out. Were we not there, same thing would have happened.

EmuBob- surf not massively treacherous now, but I noticed a really low tide which makes the slamming impact of even a smaller wave more intense. My guess is this guy got slammed and breathed in water. Best to keep your people in knee to waist deep this time of year if not capable swimmers.
