Root Canal Cost?

Does anyone have an idea of the approximate cost of a root canal procedure at a reputable clinic/hospital in Bangkok?

Suggestions as to possible locations would also be appreciated.

When you're quoted a price, check what's included. Sometimes the quoted price doesn't include the dentist's "fee." Also the root canal is typically followed up by a filling or more likely crown. And how much will that be?

See the dentist at Bangkok Nursing Home they will examine the tooth and quote a price for all work. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Many hospitals in BKK have an in-house dentist.

Another reason to love Thailand.

Several reasons its more expensive in the US:

much higher fixed costs (land, employees, utilities, taxes, etc)

mal-practice insurance (lawsuit protection for doctors)

higher quality care

more advanced technology

currency exchange rate

IP theft

non-regulation

That being said, the value per dollar is still much greater in thailand . . . and just so everyone is aware, my root canal I got in the US has been reinfected so I'm back in the market to have it done again. I got it checked this morning at a hospital and all costs including meds and x-rays came out to 715 baht. The doctor didn't quite seem to know what he was talking about (perhaps just bad english?) so I'm reading around for other better places for the actual procedure.

A western trained doctor for a few extra baht is what I'm looking for

I had some root canal work done recently in the locality of Tao Poon, Bangkok. It cost 1000 baht per hour and I was totally satisfied with the outcome.I know you wanted reputable hospitals or clinics but don't feel like the place I went to was "disreputable" in the least

Im about to have that done as well,my local dentist said 1,300 baht, local hospital 800 baht ,

or pull the tooth for 300 baht , guess like they said up above you get what you pay for ,

ps meds and a x-ray 180 baht.

asavanant clinic on thong lor was independently recommended to me by 3 different ex-pats - both in terms of both quality of service and rates they charge.

i just need to work up the courage to get over there myself ......

let me know how you get on as i have extensive dental treatment required(caps, filling, root canals, etc, etc) and i am looking for a GOOD place to get the whole lot done.

If you need extensive treatment of that nature it may be worth coming to Hanoi. The Australian Dental Clinic in is approximately half the price for root canal etc of Thailand.

Hanoi is a horrible place to live but the Australian Dentists perform to high standards and are cheap.

Could it be that maybe, just maybe....other expats might benefit from additional information????? Just because the original post is a couple months old doesn't mean that someone can't benefit from the old and/or new information. Root canals are a frequently required procedure, especially in older people (which includes a majority of the expats). Anyway, if information posted on threads older than 2 months isn't valuable then why doesn't TV delete all threads 2 months and older to clean things up????

Fyi - This past August I was quoted about 18,000 Baht (If I recall correctly) at Bangkok Nursing Home hospital for Root canal and Crown. I had broken tooth and they did a resin repair for about 1,500 Baht...still good today. BNH provides first class service but obviously they charge more too.

Just finishing my treatment at Mission Hospital... good service, very happy with result, but total cost going up.

I was quoted 7,000 Baht, but this was just for the canal treatment...

subsequent visits have added 7,300 Baht for post canal treatment and the enamel tooth.

I have one further visit to finish the job and expect a further 3,500 Baht.

I was quoted 500 for regular cap or 10,000 for gold cap.

Total for a very good job is going to be around 17,000 Baht.

Are you a dentist or the OP? I would expect not so how do you know how much pain the OP is/was in?

I just had a root canal with a crown two weeks ago here in CM at a very good dentist. The whole process took 4 visits to the dentist whereas I have had others done in the USA years back and it took 3 visits. The cost two weeks ago was: 6k baht for the root canal, 300 baht for 3 x-rays, and 9k baht for a very good quality crown. Total = 15,300 baht.

......and just to let you know I was diagnosed for needing a root canal almost 2 months ago. I had a tooth with a prior filling chip. (The tooth chipped but the filling was intact). The dentist said it would be wise for a root canal and crown rather than trying to remove the old filling and refill. (She seemed to think that a larger filling would not hold so well.) I agreed but since I had to return for a business trip to the USA a week or so after I first went to the dentist I postponed having the root canal and crown done until I returned. The dentist provided me with some antibiotics and pain killers for my trip if I was needing them. Needless to say I was in no pain and did not need them. So you see here is a first hand example how information for a root canal and crown may not be needed until months after the initial request. :D

Just for another reference, root canal theraphy in Tokyo, including 4 visits and a crown (not veener, doctor said the tooth was in the back and no need) was whooping 35 US$.

Yes, each of 4 visits was 6$, the filling was 11$. RCT is considered necessary and is almost entirely funded by plain, vanilla, national health scheme that cover the entire population.

In a world class facility and model nurses all around the place.

My father is a board certified endodontist(root canal specialist) in the US and has also taught root canal at a major university in the US. I have lived here in Thailand for many years and the only place I go for dental work is the dentalhospital bkk..it is located on Sukhimvit Soi 49. I would only have a endodontist do my root canal.Most dentists have some training in this field and will do it instead of referring you to a qualifie specialist. They are very expensive but the quality of work there is excellent. They have been written up all over these boards as the best for denat in thailand............good luck and dont be too concerned about the price as this is a procedure that can be easy or very difficult. I would prefer to have the best dentist doing it in case you run into a problem.

My report on costs . . . and just so you know, this is a reinfected root canal, not a root canal. Different procedure and costs.

First I went to Vichaiyut Hospital to just get an X-ray and a doctors opinion. They charged 715 baht for the examination, X-ray, and anti-biotics. The nurses weren't that smart though and had to do the X-ray twice to get it right. The doctor didn't seem to be a specialist either, but it was a good way to confirm the infection. Their english wasn't that great.

Then I went to BNH Hospital. The really really cute nurse definitely seemed to know her stuff. Her english was pretty good. Lots of farang walking around. Examination, X-ray, and anti-biotics cost me 1070 baht. For the actual procedure I was quoted at 43,000 baht for everything. She said BNH was the most expensive in Thailand. BNH won't accept X-rays from any other hospital.

Then I went to Thantakit. The examination and x-ray was I think 800 baht but can't remember. They quoted me at 32,000 baht for the entire procedure and the 50% gold cap. The actual procedure was 7050 baht, so the rest of the cost is the cap. They charge in piecemeal, not all at once. The doctor knew what he was doing. The nurses however appeared to be very confused about operating the x-ray, and during the procedure the doctor kept correcting the nurse and explaining the procedure to her (it was in Thai, and it was before I told them I spoke Thai).

Unfortunately the Thantakit doctor made a mistake with the crown and made it too thin. It cracked within a week, so had to go back for another 40 minute procedure. They didn't charge me a single baht for the correction.

There was zero pain throughout the entire procedure.

Anyway, it'll be another month before I go back for another x-ray to determine if the infection went away. And another 2 months before the cap gets installed. I'll report back again when it's all done.
