My Mum just went home the other day after 4 weeks here. She has huge (and I mean huge) blisters all over her legs as a result of being allergic or something to mosquito bites. She takes anti-histamine pills to try and reduce the swelling but they are none too great. Her legs are covered in dressings and she was in great pain.

Problem is the exact same thing happened to her last year and since she would like to come here again this is a very big problem. Even one little BKK mossie bite develops into a huge sore or blister.

Does anyone know anyone with similar problems? or have any advice ?,

Cheers.

I used to have the same problem when I first came to Thailand.

It gradually went away as I became more resistant to them and I have absolutely no blisters now.

My 15 year old son has the same problem. All we can do is slather on Deet and Citronella and give him antihistamine pills daily, and treat bites with antihistamine cream.

His major problem is that he scratches the irritation and the bite site turns into a running sore.

I am going to transfer this into the medical section. You will get more specific advice there.

I used to react badly to mossie bites, had one bite on my hand and it was so swolen that I could not use it for a few days, not a problem now I'm used to them.

I used to take anti-histamine every day and gradually cut them down. My mum reacts badly as well, Its a good idea to start taking anti-histamine pills about a week before they come out it does help, I found the Boots ones very good 1 a day. Obviously use a good mossie repelent as well.

This may soud a little silly, but I have been told it works wonders as a repellant..

A very good friend of mine used to do quite a bit of tramping in the South Island,NZ. During the summer the mozzies and sand flys at certain times of the day are just unreal. So mush so, that in certain partsof the national parks they have meshed sand fly/ mozzie huts. One of the forest rangers told my mate that they used Dettol and olive oil as a repellant.Due to the fact it is cheap and works as good if not better than any commercial product.

Don't know if it works here, but I'm going to find out. :D Will let you know about the outcome.

I too get quite a bad reaction to these horrible little pricks. :o

Be careful. Many people, myself included, get bad reactions from Dettol! My whole family come out in violent, painfull rashes unless Dettol is very dilute.

There are over 2,700 species of mosquitoes in the world. Fortunately mosquitos found in Thailand (or those which find YOU) do not carry malaria or other nasty diseases.

The best protection known is anything containing NN-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) at a concentration of 7.5 percent to 100 percent. Lower concentrations are sufficient for most outdoor protection, and a 15-percent concentration is recommended for children. Also wear clothing that covers most of your body, especially early morning and evening.

Only the females bite. Now ain't that typical.  :o

I can't agree with you here except for the female part..the female mozzies need blood to breed!!

They don't spray around our moo-ban in Chiang Mai for nothing. Both the Aedes and the Anopheline mosquito that carry Dengue and Malaria are alive and well in Thailand. Not too much in city centers though.

I think Denge fever is a bigger risk than Malaria in Thailand.

I have friends who lived on Koh Samui who contracted Denge in a big way.

No problems P1P, no allergic reaction here. I mixed the Dettol 50/50 with Olive oil and tried it last night. Not one bite and they normally devour me.Amazing.

So, now, do you smell like a Spanish doctors surgery? :o

Its better than smelling like a clap doctors surgery :D Actually ,the smell goes away quite quickly. I was watching these mozzies coming into land for dindins and they all did a complete u turn!

In another thread about mosquitos, several people swore by

Avon Skin so Soft. No joke. I have not tried it, but I may next time

I visit the family in Saraburi.

I've tried searching the previous threads on mosquitos & various repellants specifically looking for information on some co2 generators that are supposed to work very effectively.

Does anyone know anything about them?

Thanks! :o

we used to use the dettol oil mixture in Rockhampton, more specicly at "thompsons point" at the mouth of the fitzroy river.

The mossies were really bad at night and midgies took over during the day.

We found that it was more effective against the midgies, the thing that causes the itch is they piss on you, the oil helps prevent this and if it does get thru then the dettol prevents an infection.

How about mosquito-bite scar, does anyone know any cream/lotion to remove it?

The only scar that my wife gets from mozzies is if she scratches them. this is probably because they get slightly infected. A quick rub with a sansom stone normally helps, as it disinfects the bite.

As for scarring, I have come to the conclusion that vitiman-E cream fixes everything in Thailand...well, that's just an observation on how much of the stuff we buy :o

Nothing nasty???

I hadn't seen a friend of mine for a couple of weeks so I rang him this evening...a frail voice answered the phone...he's just had Dengue fever for the past fortnight. He told me it was the worst, most painful illness he has ever experienced. It’s also called brake-bone disease because of the excruciating bone and muscular pain that can come with it. My friend was bedridden for 2 weeks, he was delirious, developed a terrible rash, was unable to walk or eat, and survived on largely milk and paracetamol.

Where does he live? Pattaya! And he’s not been out of town for 3 years – he owns a bar and seldom ventures beyond the Sukumvit Road.

This is a little worrying (they do spray here once a year) but before Xmas my next door neighbour moved up North and his family came down with the fever almost immediately on arrival, and they’d just moved from Pattaya! Now incubation time is 4 to 7 days; that means they could easily have contracted it here too

In Brazil they used to come around and spray for mosquitoes every year, but "there are no mosquitoes in Thailand" just like there are no birdflu. TIT.

Homepro (Carrefour Pattaya) has the co2 machines; apparently very effective but also very expensive, starting at 25,000 for the smallest machine. It somehow generates co2 from butan gas, which attracts the mozzies into a trap.
