Thai police tighten security as ousted premier plans phone-in rally

BANGKOK, Oct 31 (TNA) - Thailand's police will tighten security measures at Bangkok stadium on Saturday as ousted, fugitive prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, convicted of crimes against the state and people of Thailand, makes a live phone call from overseas to a rally organised by government supporters.

Bangkok's Metropolitan Police will set up checkpoints near the stadium from Friday night until the stadium doors open at 1pm Saturday. The rally, according to leaders of the pro-government United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) which organises the gathering, will close at 10 pm.

The military may be invited to join police in providing security on Saturday on fears that a clash could erupt between UDD members and anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters who may move to the rally site from Government House which they now occupy.

Veera Musikapong, one of the major organisers of Saturday's gathering and staunch supporter of Thaksin, said he expected about 100,000 people would attend the gathering which is aimed at "demanding democracy by peaceful means."

Veera said Thaksin is now reportedly staying in Hong Kong and will phone-in around early at night.

On concerns by military chiefs that Thaksin's telephone call could rapidly deteriorate Thailand's political crisis Saturday, Veera said he personally believed Thailand could become more democratic.

The Supreme Court earlier this month sentenced Thaksin to two years imprisonment for violating the anti-corruption law over his wife Pojaman's purchase of land in Bangkok from the Bank of Thailand's Financial Institutions Development Fund. Pojaman was earlier sentenced to three years in jail in another tax evasion case.

Supreme Court President Virat Limvichai expressed concern at the planned phone-in by Thaksin, saying that the convicted prime minister would face a maximum imprisonment of seven years or a fine of Bt14,000 or both in absentia if Thaksin made the speech considered as contempt of the Thai judicial system.

Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the opposition Democrat Party, said that the current political problems in Thailand could ease if Thaksin accepted his guilt and the court's verdict.

What I find funny is the PAD sleep in the Government House and did some more wrong things and if the red pulls them out, they (the reds) are blamed for using violence.

which wrong doings? Which court told that they are wrong?

I only heard the EC telling that PPP did vote buying.......

Don't tell me the Democrat Party didn't buy. Their problem is they can't buy enough to win.

A thief broke into my house and the court decided he's guilty. But he still lives in my house. Now anyone can pull him out to send to the police.

Not if the Thief has been sleeping with your gf all along. You only just found out the truth.

I believe my spouse does not sleep with the thief. That was why I chose him/her aka voted him/her.

They're free to protest. They have Sanam Luang and Chatuchak. Why did they break into the Government House, sleep, shat and eat there like their home?

Thaksin 'plans taped message'

Edited by marshbags

Despite reports to the contrary, People Power Party MP and event organiser Jatuporn Prompan said Thaksin's phone-in plans remained unchanged and he would address his supporters at 8pm today.

"Thaksin is free to speak out and will not be restricted by topics and time constraints," Jatuporn said.

He said he anticipated Thaksin would begin his speech by rousing the crowd with an anti-coup message and sharing his thoughts on global economic volatility, before moving on to any topic of his choice.

He said he did not know from which location Thaksin would make his telephone call. There has been speculation that the ousted premier flew from London to Hong Kong via Dubai for the phone-in session.

The rally - billed as the mobile event of the "Today's Truth" talk show aired by NBT Channel - will begin at 3pm and is expected to conclude around 10pm. Key speakers are scheduled to address the crowds from 5.30pm as a forerunner to Thaksin's phone-in, which is billed as the main attraction.

The event will be taped and highlights will be broadcast during the NBT talk show on week nights.

Live, televised pandemonium....at taxpayer's expense on public television... of a convicted fugitive from justice...

With the first / original thoughts of Thaksin consequently stage managed and edited to give a more " friendly " version of what his real thoughts are!!!!!

Done of course not for the benefit of the country of Thailand, but purely for the benefit of the less than human ??? renowned and vengeful orientation his self inflicting destruction has brought upon him and his present status as an exiled criminal.

The real thoughts will of course be passed on via his sponsored leaders of the pro Thaksin group of the DAD / UDD who are hel_l bent on destruction at any costs, to further his unattainable past status via peaceful means.

marshbags :o to say the least.

koo82: I'm pretty certain that this kind of irrelevant nonsense shall be treated with the ignore it deserves. The fact that there was money flowing from both sides has absolutly no place in this discussion. I don't think you really understand the purpose of this thread.

Following the PAD philosophy of replacing a faulty voting system with one which is absolutely guaranteed to deliver a government free of interference from the electorate is a unique & brilliant concept. This is obvious ! The well educated, sage & caring leaders of the anti-Thaksin movement are far better suited to lead Thailand into the future ---- and forever --- than any government which may be elected the people in any future election.

The entire population of this country (except the anti-Thaksin movement) has proven itself incapable of voting correctly and thereby delivering a government of the correct "people". It is therefore required to ensure that they NEVER get the opportunity of voting in such a stupid manner ever again.

You should seriously reconsider your position and throw your support behind the logical solution to the current problems ---- by the government appointing 70% of the lower house of Parliament they ensure only the correct people govern Thailand. People of integrity and vision.

People who do not simply want their turn at the trough.

Well lets see, the Rajamangala Stadium is a rather large one, may be really funny if only a few hundred "supporters" show...

Organisers of the pro-government rally have started dispatching convoys to transport their people from the Northeast, seen as the stronghold of the main coalition partner, the People Power Party.

Rajamangala Stadium can accommodate 70,000 people and today's crowd might surge to around 100,000.

- The Nation -

Some 200 supporters of the government have arrived at the Rajamangala Stadium to take part in a Truth Today rally Saturday.

The supporters arrived in two buses from Kalasin, pick-up trucks and some cars early in the morning amid rains.

Let's see.. :D

Wonder why he traveled to Hongkong for this stunt.

So a convict on the run from the law travels on Thai diplomatic passport because his brother in law is the current PM and he plans to address the country on state run TV station, and some folks here have audacity to claim his "government" represents Thailand.

Yep, but quite funny, if it would not be so serious! :o

but then if you look at these post as pro Takky PR - as in "paid for advertising", it becomes even more funny!

There is still plenty of people out there who would sell their soul.... :D

Someone raised the vote buying issue first. I don't know why only Prachateepad Party (Democrat) is clean and good and the Thai Rak Thai and Palang Pracha Jon always are wrong. What concerns with PPP will be judged tan tee (immediately), but what concerns with the other party has been delayed for 10 years already, knowing that a case will be zero after 15 years.

Half of Rajamangala seats occupied

TNN cable news station reported at 1:12 pm Saturday that half of seats of the Rajamangala Stadium have been occupied by supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The station said some leaders of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship have gone on the stage to address the demonstrators.

The Nation

How many seats are there ?

Photo gallery here http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2008/11/01...es_30087383.php

I, too, am wondering why Mr T needs to go to Hong Kong for his "phone-in". If pre-recorded, he could just email it in, couldn't he ? Perhaps the visit is unrelated ?

The tension will be high by 8 pm. That's a long day at the stadium.

Actually vote buying case against Democrat party exec has been already solved - dismissed for the lack of evidence, but a couple of other Democrat members involved in the same case got punished. PPP's case is still in the works, almost a year after elections.

I don't know why only Prachateepad Party (Democrat) is clean and good and the Thai Rak Thai and Palang Pracha Jon always are wrong.

Because all the scammers fled to TRT/PPP - it sucks them like a hoover. Ten years ago TRT was a very attractive project supported by some really promising people devoted to reforming Thai society.

They all have gone and have been replaced by the likes of Youbamrungs and Yoongyuths. Yongyudh started off as a Democrat, if I remember correctly. Also Noppadon, and Veera Musigapong, the cheif UDAAD mobster.

The politics are polarised along good/evil lines - there are no visible bad apples among the Democrats, and there's not a single man left amond PPP ranks, it's filled with asswipes and thugs.

Who appoints that 70%?

The question is not who appoints them but where these 70% come from. Under PAD proposal they would come from non-political, professional and socially active circles. The goal is to purge the system from the likes of wannabe kung <deleted> warriors with fake university degrees like Karun (last time heard talking about kicking the shit out of a woman senator). I'd take any proposal that would keep him in some cheap snooker bar where he rightfully belongs instead of national parliament.

His post is not the expression of brainwashing or delirium- rather, it is expressing a political philosophy that was very popular during the 1920s and 30s particularly in Italy, Germany, Romania and Spain- wherein the governing of the state would be left to a very small number of (ultimately self- appointed)good and heroic individuals who embobied and exemplified all that was great and good the so national soul.

The results of this 'political experiment' were so disasterous that most of the world embraced representative democracy, flawed and vulnerable to abuse though it may be.

Forget about democracy and dictatorship and people power:

That's all there is to it.

Deep and long lasting emotional attachment to one man which looks totally irrational when you encounter it personally. The other day I saw a woman kissing Thaksin's picture in the paper, she reportedly has his photo in her purse instead of her husband's. Her co-workers just shrug their shoulders - "ba pai laew".

Aren't we all adults? Why some heavy language?

I voted TRT and PPP because of what they did and are doing for Thailand.

I don't vote for the other party because they caused the Tom Yum Koong Crisis in 1997.

I don't vote for another coup because it proved that 2 years after Khun Thaksin went, they worked mei dai ruang (they don't work successfully).
