Xp Pro Sp2 And Sp3 Issues - Help Needed Please

Recommended Posts

Had a fan blow on the PC (I suspected - shutting down all the time) so gave to the local shop in Buriram (no other options) and got it back today.

However, Somchai has been playing (probably trying to impress) and XP Pro now does not have SP2 or SP3 and I cannot download them for love nor money !

Trying to download SP2 I get missing PRO11.MSI from location C:\MSOCache\All Users\90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9\

Cannot find a fix here going back 3 years not anything to download from the net. I seem to rtemember a problem with this way back but a complete search of the PC produced no results.

Of course, SP3 I am scared to download (even if it would - will not I suspect) because of no SP2.

Can anyone help ?

Don't want to spend any money as this PC is 3 years old and running P4 2.93gHz so it is at the end of it's life for processing though ok for surfing and basic stuff.

Will donate beer though :o

Thanks

Service pack are cumulatives, SP3 does include SP1 and SP2, the error message regarding msocache can be fixed by using windows installer cleanup wich is a microsoft utility.

I am going to assume that you cannot download the updates.

If you have a legit copy of XP then you can request a CD from Microsoft.

You will only have a problem with SP3 if you have a AMD processor.

If you can download and you cannot get the updates to install contact Microsoft and they are amazingly helpful. The guy who helped me is:

I have never had SP3 work properly. Every time (more than 5) I have taken the auto upgrade and the poor machine does not function.

OK, I downloaded this cleanup thing and still this file is not there.

For sure this is probably a copy of Windoze - got it with the PC in Tukcom about 3 years ago. Could be legit but no disks so I guess not.

I am sure we had a work around like the Windoze authenticity validation thing because I did install SP2 before.

Running Intel (real) P4 2.93gHz so AMD not the issue (heard that one before).

Can anyone remember back to when SP2 came along and how people got past this bloody issue ?

I guess we downloaded this file PRO11.MSI and stuck it in the right place.

Anyone got or willing to email that file over ? Only 3.9mb I think - can source it on the net but no seeds or leechers.

I waited ages before daring to upgrade using Windows Update. But it went in fine. Quite a relief! :o

Mind you, I had reinstalled my XP SP2 from scratch a few weeks prior because of another problem, so my SP2 system was probably fairly "clean".

Don't know what Somchai has done but they've screwed about with languages (OK), AGV ( ?????) some security stuff just isn't there anymore (<deleted> ?) and basically sent me back to the near stone age - <deleted>.

PRO11.MSI isn't a Windows OS file. It's an Office 2003 file.

You can try to repair office this way:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Add or Remove Programs.

3. Click the Office program that you want to repair, and then click Change.

4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair, and then click Next.

5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair errors in my Office

installation, and then click Install.

6. When the repair process is finished, run the update again.

Most likely you will need to have your Office 2003 CD handy.

MS Office Download Page

http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/officeupdate/default.aspx

Or you can just try uninstalling Office. You can reinstall it then or later. You can also download the PRO11.MSI file from the 'net (google till you can find it downloadable) or perhaps get it off your Office CD.

Are you trying to get SP2/3 for Windows, or for Office? How do you know you don't have SP2 anyway?

Thanks JSixpack but if I had the disks I wouldn't have the problem. I came across that "solution" trawling the net but it isn't a solution as I don't have a disk.

I've found the file as a torrent but no seeds so cannot download it. Sort of finished way back in 06 or 07 so real problems.

Anyone got a work around or can send me the file ?

Thanks

If you are not happy with the version of windows that has been installed then have a go at reinstalling windows yourself! it's as simple as putting in an XP CD (legitimate or otherwise) and booting from that CD

It's definitely a solution because if you uninstall Microsoft Office then your problem goes away.

So then you can download and use Open Office for your edting etc. needs. You can get by just fine w/o Microsoft Office.

Er no, but I'm gong to Pattaya and potentially Bangkok in the next week or two so I should be able to get a copy at Tukcom or Panthip / MBK or wherever I think.

How will I know if it has SP3 included ?

The same way you know what other products have included in them. I don't think you need any Windows XP, just Office (Office 2003 also has a Service Pack 3); but you should have an XP SP3 disk on hand anyway, and XP does need SP3.

I think that you should invest in a Rapidshare Premium account and then ask again.

I have never had SP3 work properly. Every time (more than 5) I have taken the auto upgrade and the poor machine does not function.

Last night I went ahead with the auto update of XP SP3. Took about 2 hours. After the installation reboot my network connection (to my internet modem) would not connect. XP kept trying and failing, saying "network cable unplugged" and "network cable now connected" (or similar wording) over and over. I tried the repair function which also failed. After another hour of trying this and that I finally gave up and restored my system back to the restore point prior to the failed SP3 install. All is well again now but I am considering leaving SP3 well enough alone. Probably a resource hog anyway, and my Fujitsu Lifebook C2210 is 7 years old and long ago maxed out at 512MB (grrr!) so I think I'll just ride out the old girl as is. Other than the very upsetting 512MB limit, she has been a great machine. I've carted her all over the world. A highly durable case - my next PC will be another Fujitsu.

SP3 s a good upgrade so you should have it.

If your system has been personalised a lot such as firewalls, a/v etc then you may well find that after install your internet does not work.

Try turn off A/V first and if that does not work reduce your windows firewall settings to minimum of nil and try again. If it works then just play with settings to get internet with protection.

Thanks Benjamat. It only had McAfee antivirus but it expired recently and I haven't renewed it as of yet, but not sure if may still be executing in the background somehow. I also have a program which warns me before a registry entry change occurs, so I will disable that as well as set the firewall setting back then reinstall SP3. (BTW, I don't have the Pro version of XP).

Not sure how to play with network settings though, so I hope I won't need to. Even though I am a career computer type (graduated in the first Computer Science/Engineering degree program offered by Michigan State University in 1970), I am a (retired) dinosaur now and sadly don't know diddly squat about current operating systems :o .

P.S. The only problem I had with my Fujitsu in 7 years of daily use (carting it back and forth to the office, etc) was when I needed to replace the keyboard after (like an idiot) spilling some coffee in it while in Thailand once. Great machine.

Benjamat you're a genius! I did everything you said and now SP3 is installed on my Fujitsu and working just fine with no internet connection problems.

Thank you! :o

Spoke too quickly. After one successful session I powered down, had dinner, then powered up. Same internet connection problem as before. Tried various troubleshooting wizards but to no avail. So I restored back to before the SP3 update again. I hate Microsoft :o

Hi again,

If the upgrade worked fine after you disabled as I suggested then it is a good indication that this is where the problem arises. Did you try the same as before, again?

Windows can sometimes reset your operating system on restart automatically to previous settings. So it may be that when you restarted it simply reset your system to before you made changes. You can use syestem restore to reset again to when you did upgrade and see if it works. (you choose to restore by date and installation). Worth a try.

The other way that I know sometimes works is to install upgrade 2 before you install upgrade 3.

BTW, did you SAVE your settings after you made changes?

All I did prior to the reinstall was to uninstall McAfee Antivirus and Eusing Registry cleaner. I did notice one curious thing though when I first starter up after the SP3 upgrade: the networking icon seemed to "struggle" to connect to my internet connection, then kinda abruptly made the connection. I remember thinking at the time it did not seem quite right. So later after I powered down then back up when it didn't work I wasn't surprised due to the prior suspicious behavior. Almost like a flaky cable but I tried a different one to be sure. Same problem.

Where do I get upgrade 2? I will try installing that before upgrade 3 as you recommend. Has there already been 3 upgrades to SP3 or am I misunderstanding you somehow? Thank you.

You know it seems more and more likely to me that the problem is with your security settings.

The system worked when you disabled your a/v but did not work when you restarted.

This is almost certainly because your a/v is set to restart everytime you reboot the pc.

Look at your a/v settings and try deselecting the section where it asks you if you want to start every time windows starts.

Failing this after you restart your pc, stop the a/v before you try to access the internet.
