Homesick?

Recommended Posts

Hello! Well, I been posting here for a while I think, not that often but I always keep on track of what's going on.

Probably this is nit the first or the last post of an alien who is feeling homesick, lonely or something like that.

Situation is that this semester I have got only two subjects at the university, most of my friends are for some reason back in their countries, in a relationship, bleh bleh... And at the moment I have way too much time to handle, to less people to share with and I started to notice that Im getting depressed. (very)

Been trying to look up for part time jobs (with no success) and trying to get people for private spanish classes been also difficult.. (I thought of keep my self busy working) but not even that is working at the moment.

Im feeling quite down and I have no clue what to do.. :S

ideas?

:o

Bangkok can be a lonely place sometimes...

I find going to the gym whenever I can is always a good way to take my mind off things, have you tried that?

If I had any free time here (my problem is the opposite of yours) I would probably join a Muay Thai gym, maybe take up another kind of lesson (cooking/massage/yoga/whatever), find a nearby shooting range (great fun and very therapeutic!), maybe do a bit of mall-karaoke.

Just some ideas,

Hope you feel better soon

thanks for the replies.. :o Well, yeah I go to the gym, and I was last week in Koh Chang, but I can't be traveling much since I do have to be here twice a week to attend my classes.. the shooting range seems interesting, I already did some research on it not long ago.

The thing is that I do try to do things, like go to the cinema, go to Lumpini, cook, take my rabbit for a walk... stuff like that, right now that kind of stuff is not working. Im afraid Im getting to sad, so not many thing motivate me at this point..

Hi Popcorn, why not do some volunteer work with Burmese refugees up nr CM or an orphanage in the Kao Lak (Tsunami)area.

Working with an NGO in CM won't give you time to think about yourself.

Go for it Girl! :o

Hello GungaDin...! I would love to, but is out of Bkk, unluckily I have to be here! :D

it sounds like you are suffering some depression pop corn. maybe you should pop off to the doc and see what you can do about it? exercise does get the good endorphins pumping though, so thats one of the first things i would recommend.

a good therapist may be whats needed (im being serious here not taking the piss).

why not get on to bangkok network of women (BNOW) and see what you can come up with? im sure that there are therapists listed.

BNOW also have a lot of activities that you can take part in from pilates to salsa dancing. maybe worth a try?

You take your rabbit for walks? You do have too much time on your hands popcorn :o

OK, I know where you are coming from and when I get really homesick, I go out and have a great meal that reminds me of home. Indulge yourself--get a massage, a pedicure, a facial. I know I don't pamper myself very much and when I do, I feel much better.

Course, I am also a big believer in retail therapy but that's another story entirely :D

I've found that doing something for someone else lifts my spirits. Sort of a Random Act of Kindness. Pick someone you know needs something they can't afford or do for themselves, then make it so. Doing for others takes your mind off your own problems. And as that's where the problem is (in your head), it works.

For long term, contact different groups who are set up to assist. Off the top of my head, there's the soi dog group in BKK. And if you see something ignored that needs doing, start your own group. Just the process of getting others to help out will energise you. Of course, fighting with the local rules might get your blood boiling, but at least that's something!

As a photographer, you could join the Siam Society and research different old buildings around BKK. A decent blog with this information is long overdue...

I don't know where you are in this, but taking Thai Language classes would eat up a lot of your free time and you'd also meet new people.

Then there are groups all over BKK to join (google). Facebook even has a ladies group that meets up.

Get BNOW to send out an email to search out people you'd have something in common with (I found my dearest friend on BNOW, so I know it works).

Take a class in something wacky that you never thought you'd dare do... Learn Thai massage? Thai cultural drawing? Sculpture? Cooking?

Start Googling... as you never know where it'd take you...

Oh yeah, one other thing that works for me when I miss home (may not work in all cases, depends where home is I guess) is remind myself of how much I thought the place sucked the last time I was there!

well, that's half kidding.

I always find having something to look forward to helps too. Big plans for xmas or new years? Trip home coming up in the future? If not maybe you could come up with something, actually thats what i should be doing now...

thanks for the replies! :o I will take a look as well of the BNOW, I didn't know about it.

yeah, I do have alot of free time in my hands (I mention it, and I know that is one of the reasons for me to feel like this)

Im trying to keep possitive, to do stuff, but Im getting tired of trying and trying without real results..

I remember you, you're the one with the squall, do you still have it? you should meet up with the people in the Bangkok forum, most of them girls and we just hang out and club and stuff. nothing to existing but always thinking of new things we can do. Welcome to join up!

Some good suggestions by Desi - particularly learning Thai, as you seem to have a lot of time on your hands. It's very time consuming, very rewarding and, assuming you attend a school, you will meet a lot of new people. Plus, once you've learned some basic Thai, you might well make some Thai friends and feel far more integrated here. I think feelings of alienation are always a big factor with homesickness...

Yes, I'm homesick. I'm stuck here in Crete, Greece working to make money. I would rather be home in Bangkok.

Any other questions?

If you are interested in it: Take a scuba class. I got addicted to scuba diving. On the beginning you have to learn a couple of things keeps your brain active. Later when you go somewhere you often meet nice people on the boats. Either expats or nice tourists (scuba diver are usually not the same as the sex-tourists).

But that it worked for me does not mean that it will work for you....It is just my idea......

Short answer: homesick, go home. Now having said that, what about a pet, dog, cat, goldfish(good) not much care needed. There are many Homes for the Aging all around Thailand sure there is one near you, no doubt the elders would enjoy a visit from a Farang, only thing it will cost you is a little time(which you seem to have on hand) and a little gas to get to and from. Just check around your area I am sure there are groups in your community that would WELCOME :D:o assistant from a Farang Volunteer. :D:D
