Well I have my laptop running WindowsXP, Nokia PC Suite installed and I am about to buy the Nokia 3110c for 4590 in Airport Plaza,

My questions are :

Which cable so I need to connect the 'phone to the computer?

Do I just buy a SIM card, plug it in and away I go?

Do I need to dial into an ISP when I connect the 'phone or is it automatic?

Can I just buy the SIM card and use it or do I have to get a bill monthly?

Can I also use the 'phone for calls in and out?

I have only used a mobile phone once or twice, are there any traps to watch out for?

Thanks,

Colin

My questions are :

Which cable so I need to connect the 'phone to the computer? The phone can use "bluetooth" to a computer if your PC has "bluetooth" capability so no cable needed. If your PC does not support "bluetooth" then you need a cable connection from the phone to a USB port on the PC. Cable available at many shops in Tukcom PattayaTai

My laptop was old five years ago so I doubt it has bluetooth or any other tooth!

If they don't supply a cable with the phone, they can sell you one for more money!!

Every Nokia phone I've seen recently comes with the USB cable bundled in the box. Note that it will NOT charge the phone.

Do I just buy a SIM card, plug it in and away I go?

Short answer, yes. Long answer is that you'll have to choose your plan. I use the 1000 THB no limit one, there's other options that you purchase by the hour, not by the kB.

Do I need to dial into an ISP when I connect the 'phone or is it automatic?

Nokia suit will do it automagically for you. Either you dial the phone, or set it up to only dial out when data is requested.

Can I just buy the SIM card and use it or do I have to get a bill monthly?

There's pre-paid or the good old fashioned load the minutes option.

Can I also use the 'phone for calls in and out?

Yes, although it will pause the data connection when you do.

Hi col.

I gave you all the info in your other topic, cable name, link to nokia spec etc. :o

The cable is NOT icluded with that model mobile.

Gunga, it was 3490 I was quoted, not 4590. Sorry if I misled you, what are you going to do with two phones the same model?

Posted

One for audio, one as a modem for my laptop & a 6120 classic, in case connections improve. :D

They fit easily in my travel vest. 22 pockets... :o

Ive purchased two 3110c in last two months and neither came with the usb cable despite being shrink wrapped and allegedly unopened.

Suggest you check before leaving the store.

Loving how easy the 3110c is for mobile internet!!

There are a lot of misconceptions about cables supplied or not with the purchase of a Nokia phone.

Only the top models come with a cable, not the likes of 3110 classics.

Cables are on sale at any good IT or phone shop for around $5 or less.

I get my cables from HK via ebay, 5 days delivery, probably cheaper in Thailand. :o

I bought the 3110c for a Thai friend at the same time as I bought the N81 for myself. New in the box, the 3110c does not include the cable - he has had to borrow mine that did come with the N81.

I doubt that it's more than about 200baht for the cable - and I suspect it will work more efficiently than a Bluetooth connection even if you had one.

Edit: 3,490 baht is about right for a new 3110c - about the same as I paid at the Telewiz store at Carrefour. Might be worth trying to haggle a bit and see if they'll throw in a cable? :o

When I was still using the Nokia N80, I was able to buy a data cable that also had the charging plug built into the data cable. The phone then charged from the USB port. The E51 and my wife's 6500 slider both came with cables. Rather irritating though. Three Nokias and each needs a different data cable.

Still don't know why all phones don't use the USB connector....

Well I bought my 3110, and the cable. I paid for some internet time, can't recall how much but it vanished pretty fast, is the buy as you use the best price, I don't intend to use it much, only when I am in Chiang Mai, at home I have the desktop and a 500 baht per month unlimited ADSL.

I am still trying to figure out the mobile phone, it has Thai letters on the keys as well as Thai but when I try to enter a 'contact' it is all in Thai, I am sure it can print in English but how do I convert it??

Not sure if you have dtac or 1-2-call, but if you have dtac, call *1004 (or *1888). For 1-2-call dail *900.

Sorry, missed this post. You may have to change the phone settings away from mass storage device.

Dave, I have 12Call but nothing happened, I cannot work out how to get capitals either, my phone does not seem to gave any 'shift' key, at one stage I saw 'writing language' but that did not seem to work either (nothing happened).

I need a school 'using your new mobile phone'...

Capitals can be accessed by the lower right key, it sould look like it has an up arrow on it. When you hit it, you'll see a little "Abc" in the corner of your phone's screen change from "Abc" to "abc" to "ABC" The first is auto-capitalise the words, second is all lower case, and third is all upper case.

If you're having problems with the previous 1-2-call number go ahead and try 1175.

Posted

Well, I fixed it, my problem now is capitalising names, caps in a message is OK but I was taught that proper names begin with a capital letter, if I want 'Bob' all I can get 'bob' but only in the message section can I get 'Bob'.

Ploughing on.....

Hi Col.

It sounds like "predictive text" has / had turned itself on, which is as useless as tits on a bull.

Get the book out and turn it off.

I had the same problem once. :o

if you want a cap, hit the # key once. you should see "Abc".

Thanks Steve, my user guide has both languages so I am OK.

What I am really looking for is the thread about costs of internet connection on 1-2-Call, I have read it once but cannot find it again, I want to get a time based system, 30 hours a month or thereabouts....

Thanks Steve, I am still trying to work out how to use my phone, I cannot dial anyone, all I seem to get is an extensive menu but there is no option saying 'ring a friend' or anything like that, just things like 'capture' or 'Radio' or 'Go To' which is useless. I want it to just call my mate or even you!!

I tried the *139, it asked me to press 1 for English but when I pressed the 1, nothing sensible happened where is the 'Enter' key?

Bloody waste of 300 odd baht, do the locals come with inbuilt mobile phone abilities??

Just went down to the local 'phone shop, the girl spoke no English and all the guy could say was 'Call Centre'. He said this three or four times but gave me no indication whether it was a place or a phone call, so I will take the missus down and maybe she can make sense of it....

Colin, I think you really need to have half-an-hour with someone who a] knows how to use a mobile - which is nearly everyone! :o and b] speaks reasonable English. After that, you'll know as much as is immediately useful and the rest will follow....... Pai is full of candidates like that - PM me if you want a particular suggestion (it'll cost you a cup of good coffee/tea and a piece of delicious cake bought from one guy I have in mind). Alternatively, if you're in CM sometime when my Thai friend is here at the house - he has the same model and speaks English well; he would probably be happy to ride over to your CM house and get you started.

Most Thai of a certain age (but probably also most people a decade or so younger than you and me) seem to be able to navigate their phones and thumb in texts quicker than a courtroom stenographer - but it's not beyond reach to get at least some mobile things done while we still have the will to live........ :D

A Call Centre is a place - but you contact it by, er, calling it.
