The OP mentioned "Wondering Into Thai Culture" by Mont Redmond but couldn't remember it.

This is another miscellany of musings on Thai cultural quirks, not as down to earth as "Very Thai". It is definitely thought provoking and he is a clever writer but perhaps too clever. What he is trying to say gets lost in his verbal gymnastics.

Recommended nonetheless.

The "Falcon of Siam" is probably one of the best books written about Thailand.

Other books that spring to mind are Chuck Wow's 'Losing the Plot' Stephen Leather's 'Private Dancer' and 'Atomised' by a French author whom I forget the name.

Sorry to correct you, but it is: "Platform" by Michel Houllebecq ; not "Atomised" (Les Particules Elementaires) which was his previous novel.

Anyway, "Very Thai" is a book that I am regulary suggesting to my visiting friends.

Not bedtime reading, but these two are interesting (must be outside Thailand though).

I think you'll find that this is another book not available in Thailand.

...and another book that is well worth a read that you can't get in Thailand...

jasmine nights by s.p. somtow is a great book

"Thailand: The Worldly Kingdom" by Maurizio Pelaggi, is recent (2007) and worthwhile. A thematic history. Some subtle discussion about topics not discussed here, but doesn't overstep the mark, so the book is locally available. A bit academic - not a pageturner, but not heavygoing either. Discusses developments and events up to 2006. I bought mine at Kinokuniya Paragon.
