Bangkok was awarded Clean and Green Land at the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment in Hanoi, Vietnam from October 6 to 10, according to Thailand’s Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Saksit Tridech.

He said Bangkok was presented with this award because the city has sufficient resources to manage its environment, especially the green areas. He said the Thai capital has continually carried out environmental projects with clear results.

Mr Saksit said one of the main topics discussed at the meeting included the promotion of cooperation between ASEAN members to address environmental issues.

According to the permanent secretary, delegates praised different countries for their efforts to deal with transboundary haze pollution, and a fund for lowering haze pollution was also proposed at the meeting.

Vietnam's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment hosted the first East Asia Summit (EAS) Environment Ministers Meeting, the 11th Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment, the 7th ASEAN+3 Environment Ministerial Meeting, and the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transboundary Haze Pollution between October 6 and 10.

Guess they never took the ministers for a walk along the railway tracks , last time i was on a train BKK to Buriram , there was more garbage that had been thrown out of the windows than in the city dump , and what about all those beaches i read about that farang want to clean up . Might be green in some places , but it sure ain't clean .

Meanwhile in other news, the world's financial toilet remains jammed open as ASEAN Ministers ponder the impact on their next 'transboundary' junket.

PS Bangkok has green bits?

While I think Bangkok is far from being an environmentally clean city, I also think that Bangkok deserves some recognition for having improved its environment over the past few years.

Bangkok today is positively clean compared with the Bangkok of the late 80s early 90s.

I think an award for effort and results might be fitting - calling Bangkok a Green Land is going a tad too far.

Though who knows, this is an ASEAN award... perhaps environmental damage comes under the heading 'Internal Affairs' and hence is not subject to ASEAN comment.

beside that I agree that it sounds like a joke, maybe "He said Bangkok was presented with this award because the city has sufficient resources to manage its environment, especially the green areas. He said the Thai capital has continually carried out environmental projects with clear results."

it means that it has improved fastest. Like going fast from extreme bad to bad. While Sing and KL does not improve much anymore??

Actually they really try a lot, just it is not easy to change things in a short.

Queens Park is reasonably clean and green, as long as you dont choke to death on diesel fumes from the buses or break your neck going arse over into the holes in the pavements while getting to see it.

You should read the readers comments in the Bangkok Post's article quoted by the OP. Hilarious. I liked this one best:

Another plume to BKK despite the hulabaloo. Want to see greener areas? March to government house where the once-manicured lawn is now a ricefield...

Who sponsored the clean and green award, was it the enviromentally friendly company who supplies all Thailands plastic bags carry bags.

Of course the award seems ludicrous, and no doubt the officials of Singapore had to jab themselves with their pens to keep from laughing, but think of it as winning a medal at the special olympics: The intent is to encourage participation, to promote the efforts.

Put yourselves in the flip flops and chinese manufactured wellies of the environment officials. They work hard to try and make a difference. No matter what they do, people toss their trash without a care, big companies dump their toxic wastes without a care for the laws or the environment and everyone says you do a crappy job. The award is simply a chance to say to these folks, hey you're trying and doing the best you can. That's all it is.
