iPhone 1st gen.

Pros:

- All the built in apps are fantastic. And I mean all of them. Camera is fantastic, photo album is fantastic, Calendar is.. fantastic. Etc. Stocks app shows exchange rate for example (symbol USDTHB=X). I think the only one I am not using is YouTube.

- Thousands of free apps available

- Websurfing actually works in a way that you want to do it. A first.

- Syncs and backs up to computer automatically with minimal hassle (Nokia PC Suite, I am looking at you)

- Full featured iPod built in.

- Glass. It doesn't scratch.

- Steel. It doesn't break. This thing is built like a tank.

- Touch interface is so good I miss it on the computer

Cons:

- Cannot use as modem for the PC.

- Jailbroken and unlocked means that I have to take care updating. Otherwise major software updates would just roll into iTunes. Updating to the latest works, but you need a hacking tool. Easy enough and worked flawlessly, but a bit scary.

- Ringer not loud enough for the mall

- And lastly: Going to the mall and looking at other phones has become boring. I am hoping the others will finally conjure up some worthy competitors. Some promising things are ahead, e.g. Touch HD with insanely large screen resolution, Xperia and maybe one or two others. But they are all brand new or not out yet, and going to cost way more than an iPhone.

If you want a phone-phone just for making phone calls, the Nokia 1100 is the way to go. There is something to be said for purity. If you want a smart phone with email and stuff, iPhone is the king of the hill. :o

Just as an aside to this...........what would be the best to do? Buy a sim free, unlocked one from home country, and buy a Thai simcard when out there. Or buy one in the likes of Tukcom, Pantip etc?

I am thinking mainly the price camparison side of things. If a model in home country is about the same as one in Thailand itself, then i guess its best to go with brining one from home. If theres a VAST difference in price then its best to go with buying one in Thailand.

Thing is there dont seem to be that many prices quoted in the various websites

Check out http://www.siamphone.com/price/main.php

MBK in Bangkok has many many places that sell phones cheaper....

If you use a mobile a lot then the best is Hutch, 1st time you buy the phone at full price, this depends on the monthly package, , but after that 1st year you upgrade to the latest phone for 2 - 400 baht, or even free..

Traded that in for a Sony C902

I just saw that a C905 is going to be released soon. Very impressive specs including 8Mpixel camera, WiFI, GPS, etc. Wonder when this will be available in Thailand and the cost? Suspect with all those features it will be expensive.

Samsung duo simcard with 3 mpx Cam. If you use 2 phones for 2 sims then buy this phone its indispensable. You can use any networks, mine is one for call diversion from oz and the other sim is Dtac. Simply switch between the 2

Do you have to pick which sim is active at any one time, or are they both live at the same time ?

Sounds like this may be a good solution for me if they can somehow both be active.

Both active at the same time and they even ring a different tone and if you want to call via either sim card just press a button 0n the side of the phone and it switches. But only one sim can be primary for edge or email download.

Brilliant, thank you. I will look to get one, I am sick of lugging two phones about.

Bought one now, very pleased with it, it does everything that it says well, just need to get used to the menus. Thanks for the reccomendation :o

cool. I'm surprised every B/G doesn't have one

I think expats fall in one of two categories: a, highly responsible and never lose anything and b, completely hopeless. If you are the latter forget about buying a nice phone - I am the latter though my luck is changing due to a decrease in alcohol consumption while outdoors.

Blackberry 8707g (in Singapore):

Pros: Company paid for it :o , 3G reduces download waiting times noticeably (still works OK on 2G in BKK though), call quality generally v. clear, qwerty keyboard, great battery life for 3G phone, works with yahoo and msn instant messengers (handy for keeping in touch with mates in the UK / discussing saturday footie / rugger etc)

Cons: a little broad (quite flat though), doesn't have all the multimedia gizmos etc that a 'regular' mobile usually comes with these days ... oh yes, and people expect me to answer emails at comical hours of the night ...

Sony Ericsson W580i (in BKK):

Pros: walkman works well (need to buy an additional memory card to make full use of it but not expensive), lots of multimedia stuff to play with, small size, call quality OK

Cons: menu system not a patch on nokia, browser doesn't seem to work that well - BB browser much better

Considered one of those samsung dual-sim jobs to save carting a second phone around - but it's had mixed reviews and doesn't do all ths stuff the BB does (plus samsung stiffed me once over a faulty camera / warranty so i have blacklisted them anyway :D ) Unfortunately don't seem to be many other dual-sim phones out there?
