How intolerable that a pipsqueak country like Cambodia should contemplate the military might of Thailand.Do they not understand what would be in store for them? They should bear in mind what happened last time when an inferior former vassal state i.e Laos took on the finest of Thailand's military......Oh well, perhaps that's not a very good example.

I understand your sentiments but in fairness to George, I don't think he's exaggerating or overblowing the situation.

Check these 2 links. The word WAR is used in both articles. Both papers available on-line. BBC has not yet reported story but no doubt will.

This is news and fact.

This is just media hungry stupidness. This Thread is posted under BREAKING NEWS in thaivisa and its all wrong for this country now. Anyone that has anything to do with this country should more or less do things to make it better than it is right now. its not fun living here if it worsens I have a background in communications so I know how its working. This is just another blow directly into the moneyflow for Thailand.

If ANYONE thinks a thread like this helps Thailand right now, please SPEAK OUT!

No only people that doesnt care a dime what happens here it would post crap like this.

Now its time to keep it together, be smart, be patient. Get this machinery up and running again.

Basically the military controls the country. The gov't, as we have seen, does not control the military. Since the military have been openly asked to intervene in the PAD-PPP conflict and don't want to--because of the rather lacklustre performance of their last coup, this could be a good opportunity to exert their control.

It would be good if someone can give us the Cambodian side of this current situation. Are the Thai troops actually closer? Does Cambodia have some reason to instigate an incident of some kind?

Anupong, PM call urgent meetings on border row

BANGKOK: -- The Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, Gen Anupong Paochinda, on Tuesday morning held an urgent meeting with relevant army officials to discuss the deepening border row between Thailand and Cambodia. The meeting was held at the Royal Thai Army Headquarters.

Prime Minister and Defence Minister Somchai Wongsawat, meanwhile, called another urgent meeting with armed force commanders and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assess the situation after Cambodia told Thailand to withdraw troops from the disputed border area before noon Tuesday.

On Monday, the Cambodian authority said a "large-scale" armed conflict may happen, if the Thai troops fail to be withdrawn from the border area near the ancient temple of Preah Vihear immediately.

In the meantime at Khao Phra Wihan (Preah Vihear) National Park, many Cambodian soldiers with full arms were dispatched near the temple and most of them were former troops of Khmer Rouge who were very familiar with the border surroundings and environment.

Thai armed forces consequently had tightened security around the national park.

However, the Commander of the Second Army Region, Lt-Gen Wiboonsak Neeparn, on Tuesday morning claimed that the situation at Preah Vihear had returned to normal, as troops from both sides engaged in more talks and shared a better understanding.

The Thai soldiers will do their best to protect the country’s sovereignty, Lt-Gen Wiboonsak added.

The bottom line is this.

If the Thai army faction encroaching on the area repeatedly STOPPED doing that.

backed off 1/2 klick and sat down, this would ALL GO AWAY.

This is a manufactured distraction.

This is making the government look active and in control, by having meetings.

All they need do is say :

Do not enter the disputed land, no matter what.

Do not fire on Cambodians. Do not provoque Cambodians. This is an ORDER.

Wait for the FM and a diplomatic solution

We lose no face from waiting for that.

But if this happens,

nothing will distract from the government screw up this week.

Nothing will keep it from falling.

All smoke and mirrors, Behind the scenes the deal has probably already been struck with TS, for him to come back, like a knight in shining armour, and negotiate the saving of Thai, and pick up the kudos plus the land he wants to build a new casino city in Cambodia. Definitely sounds like a political timed operation to me. Thaidrew

+1

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the situation. T.V. has had people talking about what situation Thaksin will use to return, seeming victorious. This could well be it.

If it goes down this way people, none of you can claim that it wasn't previously orchestrated. Now hopefully some Thai people have seen this and will think about it while Thaksin is paraded back in to Thailand.

You've been reading too many Boys' Own comics. This will never ever happen. The sheer hatred for the man who has caused so much damage and division in Thailand runs much too deep.

Cambodia cant possibly sustain a "war" in this area, Thailand has got the better strategic position, firepower, resources.

It won't be just there,

'war' means total border, not just the flash point.

Down at Trat you can't defend Thailand easily. But I think more it is a deal with the Thailand government and Cambodia, to get something different in the news.

Thailand troops will not leave Cambodian border: Minister

BANGKOK: -- Thailand soldiers will not leave a disputed stretch of the border with Cambodia despite an ultimatum from Phnom Penh for them to withdraw by midday on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Sompong Amornvivat said.

"We are in our homeland. How can they expect us to leave our home?" he said in reply to a question from a reporter.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday the Thai troops should leave within 24 hours or his forces would turn the area into a "death zone".

I will SPEAK OUT!

This thread IS good for Thailand at the moment. All the news stories that are available to anyone are just that, stories.

Atleast here on Thaivisa.com people have a chance to read the stories and then comment. Ask questions and hopefully have some kind of chance of understanding what exactly is going on, not just coming to their own conclusions by reading an article on the internet/newspaper.

Here we have a chance for discussion.

Of course! We all know how the media works. HEADLINES HEADLINE HEADLINES.

The point is that this is a TEXT based forum. THE TEXT DOESNT DISAPPEAR!

You can search for it for a long time. Thaivisa is also high rated in Google which means it many times comes up on the first page about things regarding Thailand.

I just call this making it all worse. This counrty really has a problem with how its viewed from people outside of Thailand these days.

THINK!

So this is hurting thailand.... Who created the view of thailand ? it's just created by their wonderful leaders.

Thailand doesn't need anyone to hurt itself. Stupid politician spiting on foreigners coming there and then they are surprised peoples are fed up.

I now rather go to cambodia or vietnam then to thailand, the land of smile has lost the smiling face for a long time now.

Make that stupid fight, kill a few of your youngster and you'll unite a big part of the country against the external enemies. Thai nationalist will hail the flag and the king (but the latest they all do).

A good trashing would be in orders for all those peoples in power to understand this shouldn't be a personal game. But at which cost ? Not their own...

Personally I think "F1 Visa Runner" co ltd is doing more damage to his own credibility than this thread (or any other for that matter) ever could.

The real indicator on the severity of this issue will be how Thailand chooses to respond officially.

F1 runner, George doesn't write the news or headlines. Take it up with the original source.

My god.... Ireally really really didnt think there were so many incapable and stupid people around here. Of course not, he doesnt!

But he is responsible for posting it here. I am talking about Thai visa! Not some news agent in Bahrain or Stockholm!

Great answer Plus!

This is nothing at all to defend! ITS A CRAP THREAD HEADLINE HURTING THAILAND!

Should be taken right off the board or the text in the headline be changed!

Thailand almost in war.................. what a stupid nonsense!

'welcome and thank you for coming to spending your hard earned savings in my country'. We forgot to tell you about the problems and dangers, and your personal safety may be at risk. We could have told you, but for the "good" of the country and so as to hide it's problems caused by stupidity, we didn't. Don't take it personally, being ethical is not one of our strong points, we don't really know what it means, and we will do anything and everything to save our face, regardless of consequence. Now leave it you don't like it, I don't care you :o

I think the language and rhetoric being used are meant for local consumption--either Cambodian or Thai--not sure which. The fact that the international community takes an interest is secondary to all this.

Sounds like somebody is trying to heat up the situation by moving Thai soldiers closer to the Temple. What they want to achieve is unclear. I guess weaken the government, but usually a war situation or external crisis strengthens whoever is in charge so it doesn't make any sense to me. TIT, I guess.

As you pointed out that it will strengthen the existing government, this is what i think they want and need to solidify there current position

i think you may have answered my question..................

Surely the miltary force and equipment in Cambodia doesnt

even come close to that in Thailand.? Do they have an airforce and

have they bought any decent equipment in Cambodia even for their army ?

Lao, Thai troops clash on border: RCAF

An RCAF general said Thursday some 30 Thai soldiers were fired upon by an unknown number of Lao troops in the Golden Triangle region where the three countries' borders converge.

The incident happened after Thai soldiers strayed into Lao territory en route to Cambodia.

"Lao soldiers shot at the Thais [on Wednesday] as they were walking in Lao territory, but we have no information about possible casualties," the general, who asked not to be named, told the Post Thursday.

"I have not received any new reports, but we are investigating the matter carefully," he said.

The general added that since Thai soldiers began crossing the border in July, cooperation between Cambodia and Laos to monitor developments along the border has strengthened.

Soldiers from Thailand, Cambodia and Laos are normally deployed in the Golden Triangle area, but tension has increased as a result of the months-long standoff between Thai and Cambodian forces over disputed border territory.

The general said the recent unexpected arrival of seven Thai soldiers at a Cambodian military guard house in the area had further inflamed matters following last week's gun battle near Preah Vihear.

"They came to stay with our soldiers on our land," the general said. "We will burn this house [rather than cede it to them] because we built it on our own land."

Addressing the reported clash between Lao and Thai soldiers, Neang Phat, secretary of state at the Ministry of Defence, said "it is an issue between Laos and Thailand and did not involve Cambodian territory".

Remark:

It says "Golden Triange" but they mean "Emerald Triangle".

What's the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) doing in Laos, anyway? :o

Not if the army is not united. If parts of the army works against the other parts.

when was the last time thailand was in a war internally or with neighbours???? i don't mean border skirmishes......i mean real brutal ones...

while no doubt better armed the big question is can untested thai soldiers stomach the brutalites of war and cope hardships in the jungles better than their foes???

if it does happen..it's going to be bloody machine guns jungle warfare......

Somchai says Thailand cannot pull out troops now

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat said Tuesday that Thailand could not pull out troops from the disputed border area near Preah Vihear temple as demanded by Cambodian Prime Minister Hunsen now.

Somchai said the joint committee of the two countries needed to reach an agreement on how to carry out the pullout first before it could be done.

Hunsen threatened to go for a full war if Thailand did not pull out the troops from the disputed border by noon Tuesday.

Somchai said the armed forces' commanders were discussing the issue and he would summon all agencies concerned to consult on the matter at 2 pm.

'Smoke & mirrors' - i.e. political shell game.

When is an election due?

I think I smell Hun Sen's golfing buddy having something to do with this......

This should strengthen his brother in law and PPP's nationalist credentials. Nobody will want to lose their elected government in war week. I wonder what Hun Sen wants in return? Why are they complaining about thai troops this week? :o

I hope you're right, but stranger things have happened here...

(and I think you'll find that "hatred" is only from the ~50% of the population that are educated/informed enough to know better and aren't influenced by bribes)

At very least this is diversionary and centralizing for the current power regime, I just hope enough Thai people don't fall for it.

No, it will be a Turkey shoot, and Everyone knows it, i feel very sorry for cambodia at this moment, and thailand will get bad press about it, but at the end of the day look at what george has reported, its Cambodia throwing the gaunlet, not the other way round!

I live fairly close to the border for half the year and I want real news not tourist friendly TAT spin. Go ahead and boycott, you can probably get up to date info from the TAT website.

just thinking though, a War as opposed to a military confrontation, sounds worse if you were running a busness there daily, you know, somthing like a VISA Run to the cambodian border bussness??
