Yesterday after a morning of riding, we return home to be greeted by our landlord's golden retriever lying on the ground looking miserable with tear stains below her eyes. At first, I thought it was a scrape on her paw making her limp around miserably. She was really reluctant to get up and walk as if it caused her a lot of discomfort and when she did, she sort of did this funny limp as though something huge was stuck between her hind legs. As we walked her back to our landlord's place, I noticed a whitish sac thing near her anus whenever her tail lifted up. I took a closer look and it was a whitish sac about the size and shape of two hen's eggs and hanging from that by a thin membrane, something that looked like liquidy pig's liver encased in a membrane, slightly larger than a ping pong ball. The fur around her hind area, on the tail and her legs were covered and matted with a darkish liquid. Does anyone have any idea what in the world that was?

Definitely something that needs to be attended by a vet as soon as possible!

Was the dog pregnant? It sounds a bit like the placenta and the umbilical cord and something went wrong during giving birth.

We're not really sure if she was pregnant, it was one of the ideas I tossed up. The landlord did ask us out of the blue yesterday if we wanted puppies. Thought that was quite strange. Dog was nowhere in sight this morning when we left the house. I sure hope she's alright.

sounds also to me like an abortion (early delivery) or regular delivery that started but she couldnt continue for some reason... hope they took her to a vet...

it doesnt sound like a prolapse and prolapses dont bother most bitches, or cause discharges like u mentioned... (having pushed in four prolapses on three different dogs in the past-one reprolapsed), a prolapse is usually bubble gum colour and fleshy, not liquidy)...
