Hi!

My female dog was speyed six weeks ago without problem. Since then she has developed a slight limp in her right front leg and has a hemotoba in her chest. It moves like jowls - horrible and it must be terribly uncomfortable for her. The vet syringed last week and took some away but she bled until about midnight although it did lessen and was watery. He prescribed antibiotics and antiinflammatory pills that don't seem to have made any difference. Incidentally, she is a Thai dog that I eventually encouraged to stay with me a few months ago not long after I took her pup. I think she was abandoned when she became pregnant.

The hemotoba has grown again and I intend to take her to the animal hospital because I don't think my local vet has the right facilities. She is lethargic inside the house and doesn't play with her six month old pup as she used to. Outside she runs and leap and jumps ditches seemingly without problem, although she sometimes lifts her right leg as though to rest it. She's eating and drinking and her stools seem okay.

I haven't found any ticks or other parasite. What can have caused this? Does she have a clotting problem? Will a blood test identify this or any parasitic cause? How do I ask for them? What can I expect from the hospital? The growth of the hemotoba might soon choke her or fill other parts of her body and I am so worried. I need to know about the clotting too because if it is inherited I have will have a problem with speying the pup.

I don't want to lose her. Can anyone help, please?

Many thanks.

Hi,

I'm sorry but I can't say anything about this other than go to the Animal hospital. In the meantime you may want to send a pm to mangotogo and/or bambina, both are vets. As Bambina is currently studying abroad I'm not sure if she is often on TV lately.

clotting can be tested quite easily on the spot if the vet has a lab for blood work; same as for parasites. and i dont know why he is giving NSAI'S? and antibiotics? what antibiotics? if doxillin or tetracycline then the vet suspects a tick fever type thing, and yes that would be instigated by the operation and cause internal and external bleeding and if she had the disease dormant in her system. see if she has swelling around her joints (the leg that she is favouring), she should may be getting fluids intravenously, and definately go to a good animal hospital, i only saw one dog that had similar symptoms after a vaccine actually, and it was indeed dormant tick fever that was triggered, causing acute - and fatal in this case-flare up including hemorraghing and hematomas and bleeding around his joints ( a shar pei puppy they have immune issues anyway)...

edit:

sorry, i dont want to be pessimistic, but if it is not immproving and she is getting lethargic, i would also have the doc check/treat for septicemia (IV ANTIBIOTIS AND FLUIDS, which 1/ could be caused by the spay if the surgery was a bit messy, (he might not have told u that there was or wasnt a problem), 2/ always a danger when opening up an abdomenal area anyway 3/ tick fever types (there are several types one of which is only in asia for instance) and septicemia also presents...TAKE HER TEMPERATURE!! TOO LOW OR TOO HIGH IS ALSO NOT A GOOD SIGN (LESS THEN 37 MORE THEN 39.5 +-)Centigrade.
