This has got to be the dumbest question in recent times, but I just can’t figure out how to open an additional page in Firefox without loosing the original page.

In IE there is a little tab to the right of the current tab which if you click on it will open a second page without overwriting the page you are on.

There is no such tab in Firefox and I just can’t figure out how to do it, there must be a simple way that I’ve overlooked,

Press Ctrl and t simultaneously and a new tab will pop up!

or go to File (very Top left, scroll down menu) and select 2nd "New Tab"

You should be able to right click on an existing tab and select "New Tab". Also under FF Options menu be sure "Tabs" "Always show the tab bar" is checked.

Also, any link or image you can just right click on it and select "Open in new tab".

A double-click on an empty part of the tab bar will also open a new tab.

You can also add a 'new tab' button using 'customise toolbar' (right click on the toolbar to access).

You can right-click on the toolbar and select "Customise..." [sic] and from there drag and drop a "New Tab" button onto your toolbar for future use.

I knew how to do this using file, (I'm still in FF2), but didn't know about the others.

Great, I learned something new!

You could try the "Tree Style Tabs" extension. Then you can have your tabs on the left, and the indentation indicates how the tabs are related - the indents indicate that a tab was opened from the tab above.
