Drunken policeman kills girlfriend

NARATHIWAT: -- What began as a drunken jest turned into tragedy last night when a young policeman in the southern province of Narathiwat accidentally shot dead his girlfriend.

Miss Wannee Klompanya, 27, was found in the early hours of this morning in a rented room in Sungai Kolok district with a single bullet wound in her head.

Witnesses said that prior to the incident, Pol. Lance Corporal Phakphoom Thaenboon, 23, had been drinking with Miss Wannee. After becoming drunk, the young police officer had pulled out his gun in jest, before shooting his girlfriend unintentionally.

The young officer, who was eventually arrested in the house of a friend, has been charged with murder and the unauthorized possession of a weapon.

Just lucky she didn't spit on him first or she would have been dragged down the street a few hundred meters first before the "accidental" shot to the head.

In my wife's little town of Porncharoen in Nongkhai Province, during the 5 months that my mother was there, three policemen killed their wives, mistresses or girlfriends. None of them did one day in the slammer.

In one case, the aunt of the children of the dead women asked that the policemean not be put in jail as there would be no one to care for the children.

If the behavior of the local piggies is so out of hand why don't the Thai people do something about? Can any one tell me if the are or aren't?

They usually prefer not to "rock the boat." You only have to get on a bus with a crazy driver, no matter how badly he drives, no one complains. I suppose it is the same with the police!

Well...that is disheartening. Maybe the Thai people need to have a dose of Marx shot in their systems, or would that be pointless as well? I hope I am not being to idealistic but I always thought that the problem with fighting for change was that people would take it too far, not that they wouldn't fight at all. I admit though that I am a new student of Thai culture, so I still pull at my chin whiskers in wonder.

I find it amazing that so many accidental gunshot wounds are to the head....

it's easy to see that he's young and inexperienced- he hasn't learnt yet to do a runner for a few weeks / months before setting his own terms to give himself up.

Oh well - move him to an inactive post and retrain him in the correct proceedures of police work.
