If i finaly get a visa for my gf to goto canada, we,d wish to bring our dogs with us (2 small dogs) or at least one of them.

Flights to canada have 3 stops and it usualy takes 24hrs. Anyone experienced that, is it even possible? i tried to contact orbitz.com and aircanada.com but no answer for 3months

I just came over from Canada (Vancouver) to Phuket with two dogs, one in the cabin with me and one in the hold - they are two small Yorkshire Terriers.

Two flights only on Korean Air - YVR-ICN (2 hour layover) ICN-HKT.

Cost for each was $320 CAD.

Hi

I'll be taking my shizu with me next year to Chiang Mai. When you flew to Phuket, were you able to transfer the dogs yourself to the next loading area or did the airlines take care of it? I've been reading a lot of information and they make it sound very complicated. Aside from all the shots he'll need, the special crate, etc. - I've been having a lot of trouble finding out which airlines will allow dogs even in the baggage compartment - my dog is too fat to bring into the passenger area. Any info. you can give me would be great. Thanks

AC is downright hostile to animal cargo and tried to get out of their carriage. The DOT forced them to provide services for another year. They make it very difficult to transport critters. You have two options if you want the animals to arrive less stressed; Via YVR with a transfer to West Jet or through AMS using KLM all the way. KLM has the best animal handling standards and flies into YUL so you would be on a KLM plane. The problem with using AC and its code shares into YVR is that its AC 002 that comes into YVR from NRT. It arrives at 8:30 and you have 2 1/2 hrs to clear customs and health canada inspection for the dog if you want to get on the direct flight to YUL, otherwise you have to transit YYZ. The problem is that the ANA connection from BKK at NRT is that there is only 1 hr connecting time. Most people that are connecting don't get their luggage onto that flight and its a mad dash through the airport to make the connection. (Takes at least 30 minutes to connect.) This means that your dog might not get onto the flight. If you use NRT, then take the earlier flight on UA to connect on to AC 002.

The West Jet flights to YUL usually have a connecting in YWG or YYZ. As you know, Winnipeg in the winter is hel_l for living creatures and Pearson is a nightmare in the making. However, West Jet will make an effort to care for the dogs.

Another option is the EVA AC code shares to YVR. EVA has an excellent cargo service, and helpful staff but is not known for animal transport. An alternative is to transit the USA. The USA airlines excluding US Air, while not as good as KLM when it comes to critters, are better at it (Continental especially). Try and get some stops where you can exercise the animals as it's almost 24 hours of flying once connections are factored in.

Note the moratoriums in place for animal transport that take effect in the winter once the temperature drops. At least if you go through AMS, KLM will really make an effort to look after the dogs. They have a kennel and dedicated staff. If it was you, would you want one of those nasty AC baggage handlers or a friendly dutch person that cares?

Hiya,

We just flew form Bangkok to Vancouver with three dogs and a cat! Ahhhh! :o

It all went really well.

I cannot reccommend EVA Air enough. They were just fantastic with our animals. It was all very straight forward, and the staff was just so helpful.

We bought water bowls that are non-spill and fastened them to the bottom of their crates. We also attached a funnel and tube to the outside of the crates that led to the bowls so that the EVA staff could fill them. We put a tiny bit of food in each crate.

We lined the crates with puppy training pads (taped them down) and then put in blankets, towels and unwashed items of our clothing...apparently the clothing makes them a bit less frantic - and the blankets helped them snuggle in.

They came out of the 23 hour trip (one stopover) just fine. They were totally normal after we arrived. Only two of the three doggies had even had a wee-wee. I am sure they were a bit traumatized, but they are doing completely fine now- and have been ever since our arrival. In fact, I've never seen them so happy : )

Have a great flight - don't listen to the people who say it's cruel...I guarantee your dog would rather stay with you! After A LOT of checking around - EVA was the best choice for us. I HIGHLY reccommend them.

Happy travels!!

Thanks all. I now have a number of options to consider and all of them helpful. And of course, I agree with anyone who says AC stinks, for more than this reason. I would rather travel an extra pile of hours versus fly with AC.

Thanks sileah for the positive and upbeat Eva recommendation. It seems airlines permit only 2 accompanying pets per passenger, so I assume there were you and your partner? I am just one, and need to travel with 3 dogs, so was wondering if Eva will permit me to pay for the accompanying 3 animals, and not just the 2 per passenger? What costs were entailed for your pets, please? How did you manage to get them to the Bkk airport? I will use the same destination from Bkk, but will transit Vancouver to the Cdn east coast. Does Eva supply the crates or air kennels? Thanks for any help? :o
