BANGKOK, Dec. 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Thai experts warned of declining average intelligence quotient (IQ) of Thai children and called on more attention to improve IQ in upbringing.

The IQ level of Thai children aged 6-12 had dropped when the 1997 survey findings were compared with the 2002 figures, Bangkok post on Wednesday quoted experts as saying.

The figures showed that in 1997 the average IQ of Thai childrenwas 96.5 in Bangkok, 92.3 in the central region, 87.9 in the northern part.

Five years later, the corresponding figures were 94.6 in Bangkok, 88.8 in the central region and 84.2 in the North.

About 65 percent of children aged between 13-18 years old exhibited regression in their learning development, said Doctor Nichara Ruangdarakanont from Ramathibodi Hospital.

They showed limited cognitive ability and the environment in which they were brought up was not conducive to learning development.

The setback in the children's IQ levels were blamed on their parents' income levels, professions and educational backgrounds.

Many children scored below the average IQ level because they were not sufficiently exposed to the environment that stimulated learning, said doctor Nittaya Kotchapakdi, director of the National Institute for Children and Family Development.

The experts therefore called on families to provide opportunities where children could engage in activities that wouldhelp contribute to their brain development, she said. Enditem

I suspect that the test itself was flawed. After all it was asking about local flora and fauna of areas where the students lived. This is testing IQ?

IQ test are a measure of how well you THINK, problem solving, Knowledge ect. I'm not suprised that Thai children are coming up short.

All this ROTE learning and sanctioned cheating in the schools do have an effect. The children simply don't have to THINK!!

So John was right when he told me that Thais have low IQs, and that was back in March. It's taken this long to become official because, errrrr, the Thais couldn't work out how to do so.

Ah yes, Thais have low IQs, that's a good one. I personally know three Farang, with

'high' IQs who've been absolutely taken to the cleaners by young Thai women with

'low' IQs, ha ha ha :o:D . There should be a study done to determine which is more useful in life, IQ or cunning street smarts in conjunction with a sharp sense of

intuition and timing. Fukcing scientists! :D

Over on ajarn.com I have been talking about that study for the last 18 months. The Bangkok Post reported on it long ago.

Take as a whole over Thailand the IQ fell from 92 to 89. Kind of a steep drop in my opinion......

Could be a trend in many countries.

What do many kids prefer nowadays after school? Videogames, hours of worthless tv watching or reading a book?

Videogames for the most part demand problem solving skills. Surgeons play videogames to keep their reflexes sharp. Videogames don't make people stupid, but could lead to obsessive behavior and poorly developed social skills among children.

How do these IQs compare to children from other countries? We need some sort of baseline to comprehend this data. These drops in IQ could be due to human error (in computing the data), changes in test format and procedure, flawed tests, or be normal fluctuations over the long-term.

By posting this you display your ignorance as to the meaning of IQ. Intelligence is merely the ability to work things out, which is why the Mensa tests place a heavy emphasis on the 'what pattern comes next' type of test. IQ is a measurement of your intelligence. So, naturally, a 'low IQ' slapper can take a 'high IQ' farang to the cleaners, particularly if his brain is temporarily deprived of blood to maintain his hard-on. It has nothing to do with understanding a new situation. Have these 'high IQ' farangs been taken multiple times?

As for the 'ha ha ha' stuff: it comes across as a bit unstable. Something you'd like to get off your chest, perhaps? :o
