Notebook Screens Matt Vs Glossy

Featured Replies

My perspective is from just a computer user, and I have really not looked into this in a technical way, just looking at the difference between some notebooks displays it seems the screen choice is basically

Non glossy matt non LED backlit

Non glossy matt LED backlit

Glossy non LED backlit

Glossy LED backlit

From seeing the above in general use it seems to me that the overall sharper , clearer, and better color display

looks to come from the Glossy LED backlit option ( glossy = enhance colors ) , although I am sure many will not like the glossy screen because of reflections .

my non too technical question is this, is a glossy screen , just a matt screen , but with a glossy front over it ..?

and what's your thoughts and opinion on the Matt Vs Glossy screen's

TL

Not sure on the technical side, but I think the glossy screens are "made" like that, not just "something glossy" in front!

I have a glossy screen on my Acer laptop, and it's no problem at all. Reflections are not an issue, if there are some, just moving the screen a tiny little bit solves it...

battery power is a big factor.

monty , I would be interested to know if your Acer laptop is LED backlit .?

When I was choosing mine, I went for matt, not glossy. Colors are better, but worry of reflections did it for me. Maybe it exaggerated, but I felt could literally shave with the glossy ones.

Hi , I was also wondering about the LED backlit screens as well, after seeing these comments

LED backlight should ....

Use less power

Be brighter

Last longer

Provide better colors

LED backlighting makes for better displays in any size

The mass changeover from CCFL-backlit LCDs to LED-backlit ones is momentous for mobile computing. Not only does LED backlighting allow for improved battery life, it makes for a better-looking display as well. The best LED backlit display on the market right now may on the Sony VAIO VGN-AW190.

LED (light-emitting diode) backlights are becoming familiar for any sort of technology consumer as they are used in variety of electronic devices. This new kind of screen comes with lots of advantages over the typical CCFL (cold-cathode florescent lamps) screens that are used on many current laptops, such as being thinner (about half as thick as CCFL backlights) and more durable but delivering spectacular picture due to more vibrant contrasts, better power savings, and they're more eco-friendly because they contain no mercury.

Anyone using a LED backlit screen ..? :o

Nope, the Acer comes with regular backlights (it's almost 2 years old now, back then no LED lights were available on laptops).

Thanks monty, after a quick search it looks as if only the Acer One ''netbook'' has a LED backlit screen, and none of the other

Acer notebooks range have this .

I have a backlit matte LED screen on my MacBook Pro. I chose matte because it looked better in the shop, e.g. nearly the same color saturation and fewer reflections.

I don't think matte vs. glossy matters at all. Neither does LED vs non-LED. What matters is is it a good LCD or a bad LCD. And the only way to find out is to do an actual real-life comparison. There are definitely better and worse screens out there. Back when I bought my machine, I compared the MacBook (glossy) with the MacBook Pro (glossy) and found the Pro to have a way better screen - so much better it was obvious just from glancing at them side by side. Both were glossy screens though.

Back when the LED MBP came out it was pretty easy to compare battery life too - the LED ones got more but not that much more, something like 10 minutes. LED is better because it's somewhat brighter and uses somewhat less battery, but nothing earth-shattering.

I just got an Acer Aspire One with LED/Glossy screen. If you work on anything with a dark background and have bright light sources that will be reflected by the screen it is miserable. In my office, I have my back to the window and it looks like a mirror when booting. Once I am up and running with lighter backgrounds it is a non-issue.

The LED does have a significant improvement on battery life, and it also is more environmentally friendly.

As for the quality of color rendering in images in glossy/matte, I can't say I get it; it must just be an issue for professional design/photo people.
