Ilr Onto Naturalisation

Featured Replies

My wife has just had her passport returned with the ILR visa in so we're both very happy. Three years ago I was posting on here from Thailand and it was the kind help of The Scouser that set us on the path that we've walked (with some helpful tips from Vinny on the way!).

We're now looking at the next (and final?) step, which is Naturalisation. I've just read the UK Border Agency site and although hard to completely take in in one read I think that after three years in the UK and with a wad of £655 she will be able to apply for British Citizenship and then once granted be able to apply for a British Passport.

So my question is more about any potential downside:

Will having British Citizenship and Passport have any effect at all on her Thai status, buying/selling land, operating a business etc in her home country?

And are there any other things that we should consider before going through this process?

Thanks for your help :o

Well done on the ILR success :o

One of the most talked about topics on here and a big concern to a lot of people is the issue of dual passports.

Look at this thread "Travelling With Dual Nationality" currently on page 2 of the threads - sorry don't know how to make a link - and especially a link to another thread posted by Moss.

Bottom line, I think you're ok with this. If your wife doesn't have to relinquish her Thai nationality, which she doesn't, then she gets all the beneficial rights as any other citizen in both countries.

Well done again.

P.s. sending you a pm with a question 'cos don't want to hijack your thread'.

Both the UK and Thailand allow dual nationality. Taking British nationality will not effect her rights as a Thai citizen in any way.
