The Golden Rule

Featured Replies

Howdy Lang experts. I just did a lengthy Forum search and came up empty though this topic must've been brought up some time before. Too bad the search function can't be made thread-specific; it would make everything much easier on those wishing to do a little research n save people repeating themselves/ similar threads.

Anyway, I'd like to explain to some Thai friends about a work situation and would like to use the golden rule as a maxim but can't quite figure out how to say it precisely: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

As an aside, I did the TV Forum search and found alot of listings by griping Farangs going off on how in Thailand it is "Do unto others before they do unto you." Though I don't necessarily believe this is the case, it is an interesting twist on the phrase and would like an interpretation/ translation of this one too, if you would be so kind. And please with Thai script to be precise.

Thanks.

For the Golden Rule it's sometimes said like this: จงทำกับผู้อื่น ในสิ่งที่คุณอยากให้ผู้อื่นทำกับคุณ

I've found that you can manipulate the search function to search solely within the Thai Language forum by putting this in quotations within the search bar along with your other terms: "Thailand Forum > General > Thai language" as every page within the Thail language forum will have that on the page.

All the Best,

Too bad the search function can't be made thread-specific...

If you go to the top of the page on the right hand-side and click on "search" it gives you the ability to search in the current forum. There are also advanced options available for a more specific/detailed search.

กฎเกณฑ์ทองคำ

ผู้ที่มีทองคำมาก ผู้นั้นมีอำนาจตั้งกฎเกณฑ์เองได้

The Golden Rule

Whoever has the gold, makes the rules.

or heard in other circles... มึงตีกู กูก็จะตีมึงกลับ เจ็บด้วย! ^_~

Perhaps if you couched it in Buddhist terms:

Buddhism:

"...a state that is not pleasing or delightful to me, how could I inflict that upon another?" Samyutta NIkaya v. 353

"Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful." Udana-Varga 5:18

From: http://www.religioustolerance.org/reciproc.htm (This is in no way to be taken as condoning religious tolerance on my part)

Maybe someone in the Buddhist forum would be able to turn these up in Thai script for you.

What springs to mind is the common Thai saying, "TUM DEE DAI DEE, TUM CHUA DAI CHUA"

Literally - Do good (and) receive good, Do Evil (and) receive evil"
