Actually, this is almost verbatim what our Bangkok Bank branch manager told us several years ago. Her explanation was: If a bank does not know of your death, they have no legal responsibility to freeze your account -- and withdrawals, per usual, can occur. Wife has already been told to withdraw most of my funds (leaving small amount, and account open) soonest -- even before my barbecue. -

Government tweaks guidelines on latest Thailand visas
The Interior Ministry has introduced new guidelines for the much-anticipated Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) and the extension of visa-exempt stays from 30 to 60 days. The DTV is considered groundbreaking, as it allows remote workers to operate without needing a work permit, provided their employment is with overseas companies or contractors. However, the ministry has emphasized that such work must not "impinge in any way on the Thai economy," a broad and somewhat vague restriction. For visa-exempt tourists enjoying the extended 60-day stay—representing the vast maojrity of visitors—there are additional rules to consider when not engaged in typical sightseeing activities. In an earlier announcement by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in July, it was noted that "ad hoc or urgent work" could be performed for up to 15 days, provided the tourist informed the Department of Labor. Examples included attending conferences, meetings, and, more unexpectedly, tasks like repairing machinery, auditing accounts, or inspecting products. The Interior Ministry now clarifies that while attending occasional meetings is permissible, more substantial activities like those mentioned will require temporary work permits. These permits will be valid for a maximum of two 15-day periods, writes Barry Kenyon for Pattaya Mail. In response to criticism that these rules are somewhat ambiguous, the ministry assured that more detailed guidelines would be issued soon. This clarification aligns with the Pheu Thai government's announcement of its 10 priorities for the coming year, made on September 14, which includes a pledge to "overhaul visa processing." This overhaul is expected to bring even broader changes. Last July, government representatives suggested reducing the number of non-immigrant visa categories, potentially merging options like medical tourism, family visas, and film production permits into the new DTV. The rules governing retiree visas, specifically the OA and O extensions, are also expected to be revised. Another area awaiting clarification is the upcoming Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system, which will require all visa-exempt travelers to obtain approval before their trip starting next year. Once integrated with the visa-issuing database, as the government has promised, there will be little distinction between the two systems. All travelers will be screened for past criminal convictions, prior deportations from Thailand, and any outstanding Interpol warrants. The visa overhaul also presents an opportunity for the Immigration Bureau to have a say in shaping the new bureaucratic processes. Although many agencies—such as the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Board of Investment, and the Department of Labor—are involved in publicizing visa policies, the actual enforcement is carried out by immigration officers at airports and border crossings.
