What A Hassle

Featured Replies

We flew over to Bali with Air Asia in July from Johor Bahru to Jakarta and also went over to Tioman Island from Mersing in the south of Malaysia. We also stayed at a guesthouse in Mersing then and upon our return from Bali before our second trip (can only get 30 day visa to Bali now). Stayed there another time after our trip to Borneo. One of the long term employees of this guesthouse (who is 37) drinks and began to bother my 14 yr. old daughter, trying to get her to drink alcohol with him and one time put his hand on her knee. I complained to the owner with no results - he would tell us to ignore him for example. Finally after he was drunk and chased my daughter into our bungalow we put in a police report with the help of the owner's brother who is sick of this employee and all the trouble he has caused. The police arrested him and brought him to the station and had my daughter explain to him that it scared her when he chased her. They told us they would keep him for 14 days but the next morning the police came out to the guesthouse and asked some lkong term residents (who I believe are friends of the owners and this employees) questions and then released the guy that afternoon. Of course after that the owner and his friends harassed us and we left. We did put in complaints in kuala lumpur re this. We have been in Asia for over a year now and my daughter has never been bothered like this before, sometimes in Thailand guys might say things like "hello, beautiful" etc. but have never had anything like this happen before.

Simple rule for police in Malaysia - no crime done no action will be taken.

Harrasing is not a crime unless you hold a diplomatic passport or have contacts with the VIP's of the country. Sad but that is how the system works there.

But if you wish to take further action on this matter, try the local newspaper (malaymail and the star). Hope it could get some of the people from Ministry of tourism attention. Be sure to provide full details on this matter.

Disgraceful pervert. I agree with explorer tho, you should contact the newspapers---letter to the editor at the very least, detailing your daughter's terrible experience. Also, I would report the place to the Ministry of tourism. Then, I would go online, to the online forums about travelling and post the name of this place as well as your daughter's experiences. This way, even if the police don't do anything, the word is out.

Yes. I couldn't agree more with SBK. Letters to the Editor. Start with the main Malaysian Newspaper.

Thanks very much. We did go to the Ministry of Tourism in Kuala Lumpur, they said they would e-mail me a copy of their investigation. Will look up the e-mail addys of the newspapers.

I doubt the Ministry of Tourism in Malaysia would do much about this. Just out of curiousity, is the "alleged offender" a Malay/Muslim? If it was, it would all be hushed down.

If I were you, I would write a letter to the New Straits Times or The Star newspaper in Malaysia. They would definitely do something or publish it!! Give them a copy of the police report too.

There are negative things/people in every country. It is too bad you had to experience it first hand :o

Every news paper have a special column for complaints. But to get your points taken seriously try your best to talk to the editor of each news paper.

Again, remember to have all reports on what had happen coppied and ready for them to view. This will include the police report.

And you might want to try it here too -
