Government House returned to official control

BANGKOK, Dec 4 (TNA) – The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) officially returned Government House to state officials after its more than three-month occupation of the national seat of government in its protest against the government.

The Office of the Permanent Secretary to Prime Minister was the government agency to officially receive Government House back from the PAD protest movement.

The PAD called on the Office to withdraw criminal and civil lawsuits which have been filed or considered against the protesters.

Metropolitan Police commander Pol. Maj-Gen. Anun Srihiran led a contingent of about 70 personnel, including a bomb disposal squad, to inspect the premises on Thursday morning before Government House was returned to government officials.

The security officials found two handmade bombs in front of the press room as well as ammunition, golf clubs, sharply pointed wood stakes and iron bars, all of which can be used as weapons.

3 cars, jewellery had disappeared. An anonymous donor has paid off the big water bill.

Workers from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) cleaned the surrounding environs of the main buildings.

The damage to Government House, seized by anti-government protesters in August, is estimated at Bt125 million, according to the initial appraisal according to Permanent Secretary Nathi Premrasmi of the Office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday.

He was appointed by acting prime minister Chavarat Charnvirakul to chair the special committee charged with assessing the damage to property and other assets at Government House.

The damages to Government House buildings and landscaping incurred during the 98-day People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) occupation were estimated at Bt 25 million while damage to other assets was estimated at about Bt100 million.

The PAD stormed into Government House on August 26.

Heavy damage, valuables missing as protesters leave Govt House

BANGKOK: -- Heavy damage was noted and a number of valuable articles were determined to be missing as anti-government protesters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) vacated Government House after occupying it for over three months, a senior government official said Thursday.

After meeting with a special committee appointed by acting prime minister Chavarat Charnvirakul responsible for assessing the damage to property and other assets at Government House, Permanent Prime Minister's Office Secretary Nathi Premrasmi said that the initial estimate of costs on restoring the landscaping of Government House is Bt25 million.

The actual damages will be known officially next week as assigned government agencies assess damages at Government House, occupied by the PAD protesters since August 26, Mr. Nathi said.

Although the protesters had vacated Government House, its staff are still not allowed to return to work at the building after several bombs were found hidden inside the building, he said. Bomb squad police experts will be invited to retrieve the explosives first.

Among the damages tallied in the wake of the protesters were four cars belonging to the Secretariat of the Cabinet office earlier thought to have been stolen, but one was later found abandoned at a nearby intersection, Mr. Nathi said.

Other valuable items which were missing include pistols and ammunition of police guarding Government House, Buddha amulets, TV sets, cameras, computers and cash.

PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila acknowledged that there might be some thieves among the protesters and that his group is ready to compensate for the lost articles.

Key PAD leaders have proposed that the government withdraw trespassing charges filed with police and to prepare a joint agreement that neither civil nor criminal charges would be taken against the protesters, said Mr. Nathi.

The proposals have been forwarded to Mr. Chavarat, he added, but the government is expected to proceed with the charges.

Let me be the first one to say: "Pics or it didn't happened."

your pics were all over the TV news last night, including the home made bombs, slashed furnature, broken computers.... They ransacked the place....

You PAD had bombs (I guess the speculation that they were throwing their own bombs into their own crouds looks more possible)

Sorry remind me of the police lies....

I'm sure they did ask for the charges to be dropped, along with any arising from the two airport occupancies.

Thai PBs news yesterday 19hrs showed chairs and sofas with nice x cut tissues, ruined I would say.

Also a lot of smashed computers, good job.

Showed outside was a trash dump.

They obviously go their orders before screening. Channel 9 went through the area inside and out the night before and showed no damage to the interior. They must have jumped the gun.

They perfectly cleaned everything, 3 groups checked everything and they forgot the bombs and bullets, not even just put them in the next klong.....

Almost 100 % sure that it is fake from the police.

Lie 1: The girl had a bomb

Lie 2: they lost their limbs by falling over each other

Lie 3: the lost limbs were caused by bombs they brought themself

etc etc etc

the people with lost limbs were treated in hospitals and the cause is well known by now.

From the pictures posted in the link above, it certainly looks like a mob passed through. What I don't quite follow is what would motivate the police to falsify the evidence. The conventional wisdom is that they didn't move against the airports because they could see the balance of power already shifting away from PPP. Aren't the police still afraid of the poo yai waiting in the wings? The other thing is that it would have been a big logistical exercise to bring in all that rubbish, the steel stage frames, and the plastic sheets, and quite noisy to smash up all those rooms. A lot of people would have seen and heard this and somebody would talk.
