The regular burning of trash, even the govt centre nearby burns the cut down rubber trees and yesterday the hick neighbors burned a entire pile of tires.

Too much, no wind and today still just choking, eyes stinging , a sore throat.. 2 of the Thoroughbreds have nosebleeds and one is having serious respiratory distress

Isn't there any education about pollution at all. I mean this is dioxinous cancerous poisons ..

Thais feel it their right to pollute our shared planet it seems - this stuff , aside from assaulting my lungs comes down in the Arctic circle and is polluting the food chain ..

ASIA's brown clouds are not just from Indonesia

I go over to the house and in sign language and pidgeon Thai indicate that I'll take their garbage away ( even though the truck comes right by their house twice a week ) and they just grumble... about six kids scampering around breathing in toxins.

Does Thai media address this at all ?

Here are what I saw on tv:

- to reduce plastic bags by using fabric bags

- to turn off engine when filling oil

- to help pushing bus which has problems instead of sitting in your car and honking

- to unite (we will be strong)

- not to litter as it harms tourism

- not to cut trees

- not to give money to beggars (children are bought and forced to be beggars. If we don't give money out, we can help stopping them from abusing children)

- to help stopping drug selling

- to work out (ook kam lung)

- ......

I haven't seen anything saying not to burn barbage

my neighbors used to do the same to me- they just don't have the education about environmental issues that we do. you could try leading by example, and telling them about dangerous emissions etc... but as this is a long time habit for them it will most likely just fall on deaf ears.

Please read “garbage” instead :o Sorry for the typo.

Hope Thailand can ban plastic bags. Too much around here and people just burn them.

A while back we had a homeless man living on waste ground next to the apartment. He built himself a little shelter and sometimes collected cans for cash. Every night he would light himself a fire. Bizarrely although there was a lot of wood around, he would often top off his fire with plastic. He would happily nestle down besides his toxic fire night after night. Needless to say, the residents of my apartment also shared the choking poisonous fumes.

I put it to some Thai colleagues why he would choose to burn plastic in this way. The best answer came from the chief mechanic, "Because he likes it!"

P.S. The homeless guy was not burning plastic insulation off wires to get at the copper.

The only practical answer is to move - maybe to a "farang" area where they can afford the 1 baht / day rubbish collection fee.

It's criticising, a no no.

NO the rule is " No extreme negativity toward Thailand"

( however it's not Thailand I critisize , but the people .)

I take my plastic bags back to the store and it never fails to solicit giggles and rolled eyes, I even pack it myself so as to ease the chore for the check out person...

" Stupid Farang" they say...

Yeah I'll have to move - again , JHFC as last night, another windless night , another choking trash fire...and I've got a headache that isn't going away..

SO there's no concern for real environmental issues, just where tourism is involved...

just ...superficial , YES that's the word ...

btw the neighborhood gets trash pick up twice a week, they have only to put their trash next to a bin....

.I recycle most everything and give to a local guy who profits from taking it to recycle.

I only put out as " Garbage " 2 small bags a week, mostly food scraps. I also compost veggie scraps- once you're in the habit , it's easy to not create waste.

Once I saw a small boy on a ferry throwing an alu bag into the sea. Went to him and told him friendly no need to do that, there are many bins on the ferry, no good for nature, looks not nice. Mother said, also very friendly, I do not have to worry, because he ate it all, no chips in that alu bag any more. She certainly misunderstood me. So I explained it friendly again to her. Now her face got very serious. Wordless she give me a very sharp look and went away with the boy.

What went wrong?

This is me talking to the wall;

The environmental protection act of Thailand forbids the burning of rubbish in unapproved areas. As well the burning of tires is forbidden.

If you are really desperate, go visit the local environmental protection office (Pollution Control) in Phuket town. Believe it or not there are people there that do care and will help. Or, you can ask them to give you a copy of certain nationally revered person's public statements about the need to respect the environment. You could deliver the document in person and say, this was a really good article I read, perhaps you would be interested.

They would probably burn it without reading. People, such careless, that they even burn rubber tyres, are hopeless. They probably will hate him more, because of that action.

There are only 2 options: wait, live with that and hope, that they stop by themselves or move...

Going across the river today, I noticed the 'captain' throw his plastic bags overboard once he'd stuffed his face full. Normal practice.

Great idea, something printed up in Thai , a copy of that law too however I'm not sure the connection will be made between air pollution and environment, these are really quite rural folk.

The first time I saw the beach after the monsoon winds started in March, I cried, it was encrusted for the entire length with plastic refuse. Just sickening ..

We had a similar problem in our small village about a year ago, and some Thai friends talked to the government that got the local Health Department involved. They came with trucks and made announcements and even went door to door. It made a world of difference here, but I sure don't know the channels that were used. Some people still burn garbage, but it is 10% of what it used to be. Good Luck!

Yes but the OP has failed to tell everyone that his/her neighbour is a copper. And the copper wants him/her out.

There is only 1 solution to this problem and the OP has been told it so many times before in a previous thread.

GET OUT WHILST YOU CAN.

Are you actually threatening me or just genral, run of the mill- fear mongering?

" Copper " doesn't burn trash and we are on ok terms since I put up netting to keep the cats on my property.

I have several neighbors , 3 houses have been built in the last year very close and then there are 10 or so within 500 meters - stink'n, fume'n trash- burning families all around. ( not to mention the 50 or so chickens sh*tting all over the place. )

Are all these troubles really worth the aggravation you're putting yourself through? What if you just pony up the money and move. I'm sure there are places out in the country that you can rent for cheap and will allow your animals to roam freely. You already know that you ARE NOT / WILL NOT change Thai people, so do the next best thing and move.

As far as I'm concern happiness is priceless. Money? you can always make more another day.

My sympathy - I've suffered from acrid smoke at an otherwise really nice Army complex for officers. Even the hired help is burning freshly cut grass and tree branches and the like while they are wet.

My late grandmother got into trouble with German cops now and then when she burnt about 5 lbs of leaves. Minutes later, a cop car would come by!

All that torching in rural areas ... Organic material like grass should be composted! A year later is will be earth!

So your had a copper neigbour who kicked your cat and disliked you very much a couple of months ago, Now you have another few neigbour who burns trash and doesnt give a dam_n about you? This tells me something but im sure you it wont tell you nothing from the obvious bad attitude you have.

Good luck living a life of misery, I know what i would do.

I had the same problem here in Surin. I live in a housing development that charges 100 baht per month to take your trash away. A few months ago the main landfill for the area was close because it was full leaving few options for the Surin community. My development started taking some of the trash away in their own trucks ( I don't know where to ) and burning the rest of it in the corner of the development next to my home. I went to the management office and told the assistant manager this was unacceptable to be burning plastic and other trash with toxic fumes next to my home. She said she would tell them to stop burning the trash. It did not stop so I went to the manager and told her the same thing. She said she would tell them not to do it also. It did not stop so I went to the help burning the trash and told them not to do it. They said they had to burn it and could not help me. The next day they started burning the trash again so I put trash cans in the back of my Vigo, filled them with water and drove to the fire and put it out much to their amazement. As I drove away I saw the management people standing in the front of their office looking at what had just happened so I drove over and told them if they light a fire again I will put it out again. The next day the fire was back and I also was back with the water. Later that day they came to me and said they will not burn the fire again and there has been no fire since.
