When talking to jewelry shops abroad, they do not have high thoughts of Thai gold jewelry, why is that? Does anyone here know the cold facts of abroad gold and Thai gold.

And why does 18k gold jewelry cost more here in Thailand then Thai gold jewelry? Or is this just a myth.

Is the karat less or more in Thai gold bars than in rest of the worlds gold bars?

Thai gold bars are mythed to be cheaper than abroad gold bars, is this true? And if so why?

My experience with quite a few quite nice pieces (24K gold necklaces, ear rings, bracelets, with and without stones in them) had them all appraised significantly higher in the U.S. than the retail purchase price in Thailand (all were bought in Thailand). This was over many years, with different appraisers in different cities, so it was not a one time fluke. The insurance company accepted each appraisals as written with no question.

One of the explanations for the higher appriasal offered by the appraisers was that labor involved in Thailand is so cheap it kept the cost down. Made partial sense to me on the difference, but not entirely. The only negative comment I encountered was that 24K jewelry is "too soft".

Pure gold is pure gold, given that 24K is pure. I would think that a gold bar should sell for the cost of gold at that time plus what ever mark up the seller adds. It might be cheaper here because so many Thai want gold that the volume is high enough that the shops can sell at a lower profit per ounce or baht weight. And add in that there is plenty of competion (gold shops every where), unlike elsewhere in the world, to keep the price down.

No idea about your 18K gold question.

Most westerners don't like the look of Thai gold 'yellow' and don't want to pay the higher price because of the higher gold content, is why it's not common in the west

Most commonly in the states you will find 14ct & 18ct gold.

Thai gold is 23ct or 96.5 (wt.%) as compared to 18ct/75.0

24 carat gold = 99+; fineness: 990

22 carat gold = 91.6; " 916

18 carat gold = 750 " 750

14 carat gold = 58.5 " 585

9 carat gold = 37.5 " 375

Thai Gold is sold in Baht weight & Salung; 4 Salung = 1 Baht weight @ 15.2 grams

Current Gold price: $864 per ounce, up $60 from yesterday. When the $ tanks, gold will glow...

There's a safe & easy way to own gold bullion (online); not gold stock or certificates or etf's, etc; or just buy the local stuff since taking it to any gold shop in the country will give you cash at the current gold spot rate.

In addition to the world market prices affecting Thai gold prices, there are two other times that also affect it. The Chinese new year, although this could also be considered part of the world market, and the Thai new year. Prices will tend upwards at both of these times as gold is often given as a gift.

If that seasonal bump in prices is not seen in Thailand this coming year due to lower demand, it's a sure sign that recession is finally here in Thailand.

Mostly westerners dont like the color, however its a much better buy as investment, .we tend to buy jewelry as a gift and dont buy with a view to selling,.nearly all non thai gold jewelry is made in italy ,and as its imported its expensive,. ive come to veiw it as a waste of money,.especially if giving to a thai ,most see it as rubbish with no resale value,..and if you ever try to cash up 9/14/18k gold you wil horrified at the loss on what you paid,.
