Are Strawberries Good For You?

Cosmetically, they are supposedly used for whitening teeth. They can be crushed and made into an exfoliant for skin. Strawberry pigment extract can be used as a natural acid/base indicator due to the different colour of the conjugate acid and conjugate base of the pigment. As far as nutritional aspects are concerned, strawberries are fantastic. They have lots of calcium and electrolytes and very few calories. One cup (144 g) of strawberries constitutes approximately 45 calories (188 kJ) and is an excellent source of vitamin C and flavonoids. However, non-organic strawberries have the highest concentration of pesticides out of any produce. The primary pesticide used on strawberries in the U.S. is methyl bromide. It is highly toxic to the central nervous system and carcinogenic. Oh, and washing doesn't help with this one -- methyl bromide is injected into the soil and is absorbed by the plant as it grows. That means it's in there and you can't get it out.

They also have antioxidents such as antioxident ellagic which can stop tumour growth in certain parts of the body.

A US study found strawberries reduce the effects of carcinogens in tobacco smoke.

Strawberries are also used as a herbal remedy to help digestive complaints, diarrhoea, gout, arthritis, rheumatism and bad toes. The leaves are made into a tea.

London nutritionist Patrick Holford found eating strawberries and raspberries increased sex drive.

The fruits had high levels of zinc in their seeds which, unlike most fruits, were eaten rather than removed.

Zinc governs testosterone which is needed for sperm production while a woman's body prepares itself for sex more quickly if zinc levels are high.

I like the mention of sperm production.

How does an increase in vertility helps the economy?

Think of a 500.000 lay off in the US last month.

US invaded Iraq to get their strawberries?

Is that lady with the box of strawberries, (I notice she is wearing a headscarf), Iraqi?

Is she Alice or Sophie, or am I supposed to know who they are?

Come on ZZ,

I know you can do better than that.

That lady in the picture is not from Iraq.

But the berries are real.

Teacup, why do many people eat their berries with sugar?

They say a plane went through this hole........

Easy question, Alex

The sugar draws the juices out of the berries... This is due to osmosis process ja,

When the juice comes out of the berry and mixes with the sugar, then this makes them "juicy". :o

My Chemistry 101 class ....haha
