Can anyone solve the mystery of the Thai blokes and their long fingernails?

The taxi driver I had today had grown the nails on his thumbs to over one inch long, his other fingernails were well trimmed - although it looked as though he was trying to grow the nail on one of his little fingers too.

This is not the first Thai bloke I have seen with random fingers that sported very long nails.

What is the story behind this, is there some religious or practical reason for growing the nails on some fingers to these lengths?

It proves he is not a manual laborer - and you know Thailand and status!

It is to show that they do not have to do any physical work.

Maybe he plays the guitar. He may use his nail instead of a plectrum.
