More 'safety zones' to be set up in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- The metropolitan police plan to set up nine 'safety zones' in Bangkok, backed by an extensive closed-circuit television network, by early next year.

The metropolitan police, in cooperation with Chulalongkorn University, have already set up what is described as the ‘safety zones’ in Siam Square and Khao Sarn Road, two of the Thai capital’s most popular shopping districts and the areas which attract many young tourists.

Hundreds of police, security guards and defence volunteers are being deployed in a bid to prevent crime in the two areas,

Cameras have been installed at selected points in the areas, according to the Metropolitan Police Bureau Commissioner, Pol. Lt. Gen. Pansiri Praphawat.

"This is aimed at preventing and monitoring crime in the areas,” he said.

"The closed-circuit TV network has been linked to safety command centres at police stations and at Chulalongkorn University,” the metropolitan police chief said.

The metropolitan police will set up seven more 'safety zones' in Bangkok by early 2005, according to Pol. Lt. Gen. Pansiri.

This follows the highly successful gun-free zones, prostitute-free zones, bird-flu-free zones, drug-free zones and dark-influence-free zones.

The metropolitan police, in cooperation with Chulalongkorn University, have already set up what is described as the ‘safety zones’ in Siam Square and Khao Sarn Road, two of the Thai capital’s most popular shopping districts and the areas which attract many young tourists.

Crime? Defence volunteers? Sounds more like a cover for preventing possible bomb attacks to me. Perhaps it'll work better than the empty police car parked outside the British embassy every day.

In four years I have never seen nor heared of a violent crime in this two areas

especially in Khaosan Road.

What is this about?

Also those cameras will be financed by the business owners in and around those areas.

(i.e. they are forced to pay by the coops)
