I need to do a border VISA run next month and was thinking of Vientiane, I have never been there before, whats it like?. Could anyone recommend a good hotel there? - also any nightlife like discos, bars?

For anyone living in Wongamat Beach, there's a new open mall being constructed across the street from the Centara Grand Mirage resort. It's supposed to open later this year and will contain restaurants, cafes, a grocery store, etc. With any luck, the grocery store will be good. And the area could use a few more restaurants.
