A Thai friend of mine wants to take some English classes to put herself in a better position for a higher paying job. She's been looking at the AUA classes but isn't sure whether or not she should focus on conversational, business, etc. She asked my opinion but I have no clue as a native English speaker so I thought I might ask some of you who teach what your thoughts are in terms of getting the most value for your money.

She has a uni degree in marketing but currently works as a waitress in a farang oriented restaurant/bar. Her English is okay but not great. In other words she can carry on a conversation in English but she'll often ask about the meaning of certain words. I think it's a positive thing that she does ask questions and is not shy to ask if her grammar is correct as it shows she has a sincere interest in speaking the language well.

She would like to get into an office job or working in a hotel. Her dream job would be to get a job with the airlines but considering most are cutting back I always try to remind her of the business realities of getting such a job anytime soon.

So, based on the curriculum, focus, quality, and such, any recommendations for her in terms of what type of class and perhaps what schools might get her the most value for her baht in relation to what her goals are?

TIA for any advice or suggestions.

Where is she located? Location is a major factor.

Duh! I tried to include all of the important factors and forgot one of the most important :-)

She's in BKK. She lives near Lad Phrao but works near Chit Lom.

I'm a freelance teacher, with work experience in marketing. I have a PhD in Communications from one of the best universities in Australia, and I have more than 5 years teaching ESL to Asian students here and in Australia. At the moment I am teaching business English at a number of multinational companies based in Bangkok. I also have experience writing IELTS courses, lecturing and teaching at universities here in SEA and Australia.

It'd be a pleasure to teach another student. I'm located in Silom. My hourly rate is a min of 500 Baht per hour (min 2 hours), which can be negotiated if you wish to study with friends or colleagues.

Feel free to PM me if you like :o .

I will leave the recommendations on actual schooling to LP but in the short term if she has access to ABC Australia they have some excellent shows on word/phrase situation useage.
