Exploited T-shirts

For many years I've seen Thai people wearing Exploited t-shirts with "punks not dead" on them. I've asked maybe 100 wearers if they know the band and not one of them do. None of them seem interested to know that I knew them and just laugh when I tell them about the time the lead singer smashed a beer bottle over my head

Why on earth do they wear them, I really want to know? Anarchism is not tha big in Thailand.

I'd be even more surprised to see if the spelling of the words was correct on the T-shirts.

Some 2 years back there was a Thai boy band appearing with a video clip on UBC with one of their songs with one of the members t-shirt reads "<deleted> YOU". And this video clip was shown over and over again on UBC as part of the artist promotion

Note: Boy band not rock band

Guess it doesn't matter what it reads, as long it looks nice on them.

I saw a guy yesterday with a large swastika - there were a number of ex students who wore nazi swastikas and they were well aware of what it stood for - I was quite shocked.

Incedentally, the work "swastika" and the Thai greeting, "sawas dee kaa" have the same background.

You're partly correct. "Sawat dee" comes from the Sanskrit word "svasti." The word "khaa" in Thai is just a feminine politeness particle added to the end of sentences, like its masculine counterpart, "khrap." These politeness particles have nothing to do with the word "svasti," and it is just a coincidence that the "khaa" in "sawat dee khaa" makes the word appear even more similar to "swastika" than simply "svasti".

The swastika symbol as used by the Nazi Party of Germany is unrelated to the Thai usage, and derived from a different form of the same word, "svastika."

So yes, "sawat dee" shares a common background with "swastika", but the Thai word "khaa" does not.

About a year ago, all the family and myself were waiting for wifes 14yr old son to get changed so we could go for a day out. He's finally ready, and walks into the room with a <deleted> OFF W4N*ERS tee shirt on.

I refused to leave the house with him wearing it.

Ain't it odd you posted this today - I've just spent about the past 2 hours watching old Dead Kennedys and Exploited videos on YouTube!

I've seen numerous said t-shirts around Laos also - but the strangest thing is I've never seen any for sale - anywhere!

I have also seen several of the "Vestal Masturbation" Cradle of Filth T-Shirts - for those not aware it's the one with the image of part naked nun masterbating on the front and "Jesus is a c*nt" in large writing on the back. Now I actually wish I could find where they buy these shirts as that shirt in particular is very hard to get hold of having being banned in many countries! Although you run the risk being arrested if wearing it!

It's not just the Thais that wear shirts proclaiming identities unknown to the wearer. Generally I wear polo shirts but also have a small stock of tee shirts for slobbing around in. I don't bother much what they say as long as they DON"T say Thailand or Pattaya or Bangkok or similar. So I just go down the market negotiate a price and buy half a dozen all light colours with some motif/logo on.

So Saturday I'm wearing a white Fox tee shirt whilst I'm wandering around town. I end up in Scrooge pub in Itaewon for a few beers and a game of pool. This American guy goes nuts asking me things like "Wow man, are you really into all the extreme biking stuff?" . Well I haven't a cooking flue what he's on about but once he's explained the relevance of Fox I let him know as far as I'm concerned it's only a <deleted>' tee shirt .

It's still only a tee shirt. I did also once have a Billabong shirt but that went to the great laundry in the sky (aka the charity bin) some months back.
