Here in Thailand thugs and especially idiots are given way to much leash. It is unbelievable what Thai society lets their people get away with.

Put on a yellow shirt and the leash apparently gets a whole lot longer. Way too long.

Has nothing to do with the colour of your shirt. Just immerse yourself in daily Thai life and speak the language and mostly associate with Thais for a couple of years. What many of them can get away with even when their own familymembers now it is wrong ..... nothing to o with colour of their shirt. Everything to do with kreng jai and face.

If you are a thug who puts on a yellow shirt in protest of the popular vote, you can camp out in government house or at the airport of choice for as long as you like. Perhaps the general public does not approve, but they are inferior anyway. TiT. Army is there to back you up.

If you are a thug in a red shirt, chances are that the police actually tries to do its job.

So one thug is better than another thug? If someone is a thug they should be treated as such. No need to give excuses no matter which side you are on. A thug is a thug is a thug. They should be arrested and dealt with.

But no what you are advocating is .... he could do it, why don't you let me do it. It is simple. It has to end somewhere and it ends here obviously.

What? You need to read again, think and find that I'm not advocating anything of the like. I'm arguing for zero tolerance against thuggery, regardless of whether or not the thugs sympathise with UDD, PAD or whatever. But putting on a yellow shirt has allowed thugs to get away with almost anything lately. Which is completely unacceptable.

I think you and I broadly agree - I'm certainly with you on both these neat egg analogies. Just two qualifications to my agreement: "beware the power of wishful thinking" i.e. retain some objectivity in seeing what, in this case, politicians can/will do ("Politics is the art of the possible" [bismarck] and "A week is a long time in politics" [Harold Wilson, former British PM])............. and (most) people here raising questions about Abhisit/Democrats/partners etc really aren't "doomsayers" wishing they will fail. IMHO, what he's at the front of is the current "last best hope" for Thai politics to progress - but the difficulties are plainly great. Overall, I think it is time for optimism to predominate - just tempered with realism (there being so few "white knights" in the real world). Like "Change you can believe in", we hope it will work.......... and we'll see if it does.

Suthep's car pelted with eggs, water bottles in Pathum Thani

Pathum Thani - Some 500 red-shirted protesters rallied in front of the Defence College Saturday morning and pelted the car of Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban with eggs and water bottles.

A TV cameraman of Channel 5 was hit with an egg.

Before Suthep arrived, the protesters also burned effigies of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Suthep and burned mock-up coffins.

Some 200 policemen were deployed to keep security and prevent the protesters from entering the college's compound.

Photographer injured in ping pong bomb attack against Suthep's car

Pathum Thani - A ping pong bomb was thrown at the car of Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban when it was driving through red-shirted protesters in Pathum Thani.

Chatchai Kebui, a photographer of the Public Relations Department's Pathum Thani office, suffered minor injury on his stomach when he was hit by the bomb.

The bomb was thrown at Suthep's car when it was leaving the National Defence College at 11:30 am.

The explosion also terrified the protesters.

Red-shirts greet ministers

More than 150 red-shirt protesters in Pathum Thani province welcomed Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban's visit to an educational institution on Saturday morning by throwing plastic bottles and eggs at his car.

Upon his return, a small explosive, or a ping-pong bomb, was thrown at his motorcade. The windshield of a security car cracked while a cameraman from the state-run NBT station was wounded.

Another cameraman of TV channel 5 was hit by an egg when he was capturing the picture of Mr Suthep arriving at the venue.

4 held for motorcade attack

Police yesterday arrested four protesters accused of throwing objects at Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban's motorcade in Pathum Thani on Saturday.

Ploen Thannyapot, 47, Siriporn Sawetsomboon, 36, Nittaya Nenthong, 45, and Samai Passapan, 33, all from the province, were charged with destroying property and physical assault and attempted battery.

The suspects confessed, saying they were trying to attract political attention.

Sombun Khunthongthai, the leader of the red-shirt protest, was booked on the same charges but flatly denied them, saying police ordered him to find a scapegoat for tossing a ping-pong bomb at the motorcade.

Police feared being transferred if he could not find the bomb-thrower but he refused to look for the scapegoat, he said.

"There is evidence incriminating the suspect. Police just have to look at the video clip,'' he said.

Hundreds of red-shirt protesters had gathered at the College of Local Administration on Saturday, as Suthep was about to hold a meeting with local leaders.

After the meeting, as Suthep was leaving the campus in his car, the demonstrators flung eggs, shoes, water bottles, and a homemade explosive device, hurting a cameraman for NBT station.

Suthep instructed police to bring those responsible for the violence to justice.

Weapons Found at Red-shirt Supporters' Shelter in Capital

Police officers have seized a number of weapons found at a red-shirt group shelter at Sanam Luang. However, the City Police chief said they are still uncertain about whether the weapons are linked to the group.

Six people were arrested today with two remote-control bombs, two ping-pong bombs, seven cylindrical objects, a black rubber ball containing nine lock nuts, eight knives, four steel whips, ten wooden and steel batons, a waistcoat modified to serve as a bullet proof vest, a gas mask, and three slingshots.

The seized weapons were found in a shelter owned by supporters of the red-shirt group.

Investigators charged the arrested suspects with possessing explosives without licenses, but they all deny the allegations.

Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Police Lieutenant General Worapong Chiewpreecha stated that it is still too early to confirm links between the individuals arrested, the seized weapons, and the red-shirt group, though its members had used the Sanam Luang as their shelter.

The arrest was a part of Channasongkram Police Station’s campaign to clamp down on potential crimes at Sanam Luang.

This is the woman who brought the ping pong bomb to Pathum Thani when the reds "welcomed" Suthep on 14 March and made the scene that the reds did that. She wore light blue jacket and was caught by the reds.

Of course the incidents undermined the yellow shirts. They lost support for their actions and now the red shirts are following the same path. Street protestors in Thailand right now are just not popular whatever colour they wear. It is also not about how people read local events but about how the media create a meme which becomes accepted, and the in this the reds are extremely silly to do things that they know the press will highlight.

I am sure you are sincere with what you say. However, when you say "we" it is assuming a bit much. The reds are to my understanding a very loose alliance of diverse groups with diverse aims. Within this umbrella group there are certainly factions who practice and want violence and even groups who do indeed want to copy exactly what the yellows did. There are of course goups who dont espouse violence too.

Red-shirt Group in Chiang Mai Prepares Eggs to Throw at Deputy PM

The red-shirt group in Chiang Mai province has reportedly provided eggs to its members in preparation for an attack on the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security following reports of an imminent visit.

The 'Love Chiang Mai 51' red-shirt group gathered at Chaing Mai Airport to protest Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban’s arrival after there was speculation that he would attend the wedding ceremony of a former Democrat key member’s relative.

The red-shirt group in Chiang Mai Province apparently persuaded its supporters to join the protest and provided eggs to throw at the Deputy Prime Minister.

Chiang Mai Police assigned 500 police officers to secure the airport area and another 300 officers were deployed to safeguard the area around the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

However reports say Suthep may not visit the province after all due to engagements in Bangkok.

PTP definitely dont want the government entering the areas they think belong to them and getting the government message ovver. However, so far the demios have been small and the government visits succesful. It also serves the government well when the red demonstrators are seen throwing eggs and ping pong bombs around. It works to create the idea that the reds are just the same as the yellows in the minds of the rural people who may not naturally be government supporters.

The red/Thaksin/PTP side are having a hard time right now.

Ex-PM Somchai eggs on UDD

Former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, who is also the brother-in-law of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, urged the red-clad United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) supporters in Chiang Mai to join the mass anti-government rally in front of Government House on Thursday.

He made a four-minute phone-in to the UDD supporters at a hotel in Chiang Mai province on Sunday.

"Thaksin is still fine. If you love Thaksin, don't forget to join the UDD protest in front of Government House on March 26," said Mr Somchai.

They are trying to whip people up and mobilise them more and more form the North as bits of the Isaan go off line to them.

300K for the March 26 gig looks a tad high although it remains to be seen.

Wonder if Giles will call in to remind people of the evils of Thaksin and not to rely on PTP and that it is all about the revolution and ...... on Thursdays rally for Thaksin.

Thailand not being big on carpets under which to try and sweep inconvenient realities, I guess it's natural to go for the airbrush approach to re-writing history instead. Actually, airbrush implies a subtle approach - whitewash fits better here.

Thaksin/Giles/Red Shirts....they certainly are odd bedfellows...

As you say, quite a lot will hinge on the 300,000. If Thaksin's final trump card, "the naming of names" (that everyone already knows) then may be a big yawn and if the 300,000 don't materialize, just how much more credibility knocking can Red Shirts/Thaksin/PTP/et al continue to take? The "hundreds of thousands" at the ASEAN Summit that turned out to be 10 protesters set the stage. That and the 15-day deadlines for their demands... which repeated itself with a 30-day deadline... which has come and gone as well. Censure debate failure. PTP MP's abandoning ship.... it's all too familiar.

Even Thaksin's voodoo removal hasn't worked... again.
