my usa passport expires in may of 09. my double entry tourist visa extension expires at the end of january 09, so i will go to lao pdr to apply for a new double entry thai visa.

will i be able to get a new double entry tourist visa in vientienne with about 4 1/2 months remaining on my passport, or must i get a new passport in bangkok before the trip?

the usa consular services site says 2 weeks for a new passport. anyone have experience with this?

A UK passport takes a week to process, no idea about the USA.

Vientenne make take the formal line of 6 months validity needed to issue a visa.

Just renewed my wifes and it was approx. 17 days but there is a notice on the board at the embassey that states for a few dollars more they will fast track the new passport.

Laos also requires 6 months left on the passport for entry as well as Thailand.

They have an appointment system which will save you some time because you do not need to take a number. An appointment is not mandatory thought.

Both times I've had a new UK passport from the Bangkok embassy, as I recall, it's taken seven working days. I don't think there is a fast track option.

one of my work colleagues recently entered Laos to do Visa -she is an American - she was refused visa and had to get a new passport in Laos - I will ask her today - cost and time - as she was only away for five/ six days to my recollection - and had a new passport. She applied in Laos American Embassy for the new passport - will post info this evening for you.
