Marriage To Chinese National In Thailand

Does anyone have any first hand experience of marrying a Chinese national in Thailand. I know that I have to get an affirmation document from the British Embassy & provide my original divorce paper / decree.

I presume she will have to obtain a similar affirmation from the Chinese Embassy in BKK

Are there any other documents required other than the usual passports copies & translations ?

Is it better to enlist the help of an agency ?

I married a my Thai wife in Thailand and the procedure was pretty straightforward. It seems quite common for two foreigners to marry here. This link might be helpful

Just a note of warning - the website advises arriving in Thailand 3-5 days before the wedding date. My experience of Thai bureaucracy is that you should allow at least 5 days. Also, make allowances for public holidays.

Best advice would be to visit the local Amphur office as soon as possible and ask for a checklist of exactly what documents you will each need. Make sure you get the name of the official who gives you the checklist.

If you don't have a Thai speaker to help you, probably best to employ an agency.

Hi all, I'm bumping up this months-old post because I'm in the same boat as the opening poster and scratching my head. I am a British national. My fiancee is a Hong Kong Chinese national. We contacted an agency who said they could help us handle translation of British and Chinese affirmations to marry, authentication of the translations by the Ministry of FA, registration, and translation of marriage certificate back to English and Chinese for notarizing by respective embassies. The total fee was 13,500bt, plus another 8,000bt for Chinese translation.

This sounded pretty expensive already, but a week later the agency contacts us again and says they made a mistake in the quotation and the Chinese translation would actually cost 19,500bt, which is just extortionate. By way of explanation of the higher cost, they said the Chinese affirmation would need to be translated from Chinese to English and then from English to Thai, because the MFA would not accept a direct Chinese to Thai translation. This does not make sense to me - why would a Thai translation of an English translation of a Chinese document be any more valid than a direct Chinese to Thai translation?

Does anyone have any experience dealing with Chinese affirmation documents? Is this really how much it costs to get Chinese legal documents translated? Surely not.

Does the MFA really only accept Chinese-to-English-to-Thai translations of affirmations? And if so, does the Chinese to English translation need to be done by a translator recognized by the MFA or can any translator do it?

You know, it’s just a thought, but maybe you could ask another agency (or two)? Like get more then one quote for a service?
