if your employment contract stated that you must give 3 months notice before leaving, what action can the company take if you stopped coming in after 1 month?

is there legal action they can take? or is it just that you'd burn your bridge with that employer etc?

It depends upon what your contract says. In the section where it calls out the requirement for 3 months notice, are there any words such as "or pay in lieu of"?
