I recently bought two of these, but the vendor had no idea of the name except in Thai (why should she?). The Thai name was "something yippun", i.e. it's supposedly Japanese:

Does anybody know the English or Latin name? The cat I know, she's a Ragdoll by name of Amanda :o

At first glance it looks like it might be a hibiscus. :o

Thanks for the suggestion, after googling "hibiscus" I feel that you may be right. They can obviously look in many more different ways than I knew. BTW, the flowers are really huge, 15-20 cm (6"-8") across.

We have one of these at the side of the house and it's huge the good lady say,s it's called chabaa, at least that's what it sounds like. Nice big shrub as a background.

I bought one at the market about a year ago in red. It's a sort of giant hibiscus alright. According to the lady who sold it, it originated from Philippines. But unfortunately the plant died due to some moth infection. Still searching for another to replace it.
