Why The Need For Giant Pick-up Trucks?

It really depends on the type of accident and yes I have read other articles contradicting this, in a roll over it would be worse in an SUV. The Trrl is a Uk organisation involved with making driving safer for 35+years. It says in a 2 car incident you would be better off in an SUV. No I dont want to try it thanks and yes it just my formulated opinion as is yours. I see many tests on this type of vehicle and they use all participants deaths/injuries as a measure of its safety so if I walk away from my SUV unscathed and you are dead in your vehicle then they are clasifying the SUV as not so good. I am only interested in my own survival and whilst sorry for any other party I cannot consider the rest of the world.

There is a UK programme "Top Gear" they tried destroying a pick up recenlty and they couldnt, dropped it off buildings, chucked it in the sea etc still wouldn't die, yes I know the car survived and the passengers probably wouldn't. I know strength is not the overall factor and that you really want all the metal concerteenering around you to absorb the impact and for the car to be totally destroyed in this way.

A pickup is NOT an SUV and yes, I saw the Top Gear prog that was about reliability not safety.

If you know of a way you can choose what "type" of accident you have, let me know.

as for the rest of the world.....no man is an island - I take it you will leave no widow or children....that insurance premiums won't go up to pay for your hospital bills and that the people you serve into will have no dependents too....not to mention the property and other cars damaged when you loose control...

Yes, there is a seat at the board somewhere down the road, but considering that even my dad at 65 is still waiting for his seat and my 90+ year old grandpa is still at the helm, you do still need to do your own thing. That's a popular misconception for a lot of the grumpy-bitter crowd. We'e not all sitting around being fanned and fed grapes in massage parlours, at least not 7 days a week.

I wasn't implying it was easy. Thanks for the insight into succession politics, too, I didn't really expect you to be anywhere near the top at your tender age of 30+ but I didn't realise it was that difficult.

born with an inbred hatred of other peoples hard earned money , other peoples good fortune , honest work and luck , they feed off a seemingly endless supply of jealousy and bile to nourish their belief that anybody with more than them should just hand it over unquestioningly as it was in all probability unfairly gained in the first place.

pick up trucks and mercedes benzs , due to their size , cost and powerful engines , cause the neurones in these dinosaurs brains to fizz and pop with anger and envy as they excite dim and foggy memories of lords of the manor on horseback riding roughshod through the heather to give the peasantry a well deserved slapping and the proven fact that the sight of an old sputtering mazda can even cause the drivers of beige kias and their families to burst out in uncontrollable laughter is something that they just cannot take with a good spirit.

Couldn't be farther from the truth but very funny. :D Actualy Tax, I'm jealous of you - I wish I'd spent the prime years of my life making false teeth in England.

3 litre engines enable cruising speeds to be maintained at low revs and that means they are working more efficiently with less stress on the moving parts and they use less fuel, and you can really blast away from traffic lights too.

Diesel engines are designed to operate most efficiently at higher rpm's than gasoline engines. Drivers of diesel engines who drive at lower rpm's will experience a buildup of oil sludge in the injectors in fairly short order. This is the reason for the huge clouds of black smoke some of these guys put out...

Plus diesel fuel is a low grade fuel....just doesn't have the capability of burning clean at high or low speeds. :o

Deisel engines are designed to work at low revs, check out the tach, most deisels only rev to 5 thou,.max torque is usually acheived around 2-2500 revs,.

Just to have my ten cents worth I think there is a lot of machismo involved especially with Thais.

You only have to check out the tinted windows, the big bull bars, and the shade wearing drivers at night to confirm this!!

I have mirrored glass, which is good when you road rage as much as I do. The Thais dont know who is inside... I have a bull bar on the front and back (solid steel), it makes me feel safe and also the idiots on the road do not tend to play chicken as much. Sitting very high on the road is also very safe as I can see over the top of most cars and can read the traffic a lot better. Anyway thats my excuse and Im sticking to it. :D

Mitsubishi Strada, 2.8 diesel. I actually bought it with all the extras on it, which included massive wheels/ high driving. It is definately an all terrain vehicle and being in the land business it is a crucial tool for my business. When I go looking for land, I find things the "mini mees" cannot, due to being able to get there in the first place.

So who is going to buy this land from you then? Dont tell me you are one of the guys that started to sell land on the moon a few years ago on internet? :D

I have a strada 2.8 myself, but the 2 wd low version. Sure there are times in the rain season i can not acces all the roads on Samui, but realy, who cares? It runs on low fuel on the mainland on my trips, and i live where i realy dont need 4 wd to acces my house. (Btw, i grew up countryside in Sweden and anybody bringing out the 4 wd with less than a meter snow on the road, was recommended to make a penisextension.)

I can understand if you live on a place were it is realy needed with 4wd and high vehicles to acces your home. But i also meet alot of "4w drivers" who will never stop bragging about the great performance of the truck. You jump in and say: "so,4wd, you ever use it?" you get the answer "you kidding? almost everyday!" you ask "where?" "ohhh, i go offroad and i go in the mountains and etc." and then you pass the question "so, this little extra shiftstick, how does it work, can you show me?" "errrmm, i think here is backweel, or wait, front weel, or....something like this and its all 4!"

Yeah, right. Good luck with your high fuelconsumption on the highway on the mainland.

Then offcourse there are the real drivers, who know by heart how to use this "extra little shiftstick", and who realy needs it and can use it. I think that was who these cars were made for in the first place but i dont know? Just find it rare to meet these guys around here in Samui. Farangs or Thais. Most of them seem to purchase a 4wd to have a winner in cardiscussions more than on the roads. But then again, thats my view. :D

:D Wow, really? Great singer although I went to a festival in Skye once in the pouring rain, where he was the main attraction. He refused to play as he was scared of getting electrocuted - there were many Glaswegians in the crowd that day wanting to give him a 'handshake'.

Diesel is a low grade fuel......

so it doesn't need as much refining as gasoline, therefore less energy and wastage to manufacture

diesel engines will run on a wide range of fuels without modification making them adaptable for developing countries.

diesel is less susceptible to contamination by other liquids (water, oil chemicals etc) so is easier to store.

when you burn diesel you basically get carbon and water - much less harmful by-products than from gasoline. (Yes I know about additives and particulates - all much easier to control)

diesel engines run at lower rpm than gasoline and tend to last longer.

diesel does not require spark plugs so doing away with a component that can break down and stop the vehicle from operating.

diesel is less volatile so is safer and easier to transport and evaporates less in warm climates. if you throw a match into diesel it will go out (don't try this at home! Well at least not MY home)

LeMans was won by an Audi running on diesel

SEAT, BMW and Peugeot have also raced a diesels..

Not quite, many pick ups fall into what car tests are now calling a crossover vehicle double cab pick ups etc many Thais now seem to have these, I never said I could choose my accident and I did say the Top gear test was about the indestructible pick up not about safety I threw it in as a matter of interest it was amusing. Size is an important equation in any accident (what exactly is a SEDAN big Merc or Ford Mondeo or both fit this category?) and I did specify someone hitting me or me hitting them, I would still rather have more metal . But I suppose I had better go and drink your yellow snow as my viewpoint is not acceptable please feel free to scream and shout and have the last word. You know you would get a much better response without the insults.

This is what i would call a SEDAN as i'm from the Uk we dont call them sedans we call them saloons, on the other hand I would call a merc 500 a saloon too and it would do much better in an accident. A typical Bangkok street for me would be made up of many cars like this and pick ups, this is where I am buying for. I do not buy cars for other folks safety otherwise it would be covered in cotton wool and be limited to 5mph.

Not quite, many pick ups fall into what car tests are now calling a crossover vehicle double cab pick ups etc many Thais now seem to have these, I never said I could choose my accident and I did say the Top gear test was about the indestructible pick up not about safety I threw it in as a matter of interest it was amusing. Size is an important equation in any accident (what exactly is a SEDAN big Merc or Ford Mondeo or both fit this category?) and I did specify someone hitting me or me hitting them, I would still rather have more metal . But I suppose I had better go and drink your yellow snow as my viewpoint is not acceptable please feel free to scream and shout and have the last word. You know you would get a much better response without the insults.

Now you don't really seem to understand the problem here...as the thread is set in Thailand I think it is only fair to assume we're talking about pickups as used/built here.

You're trying to move the goal posts but you don't understand the game.....it is the construction of pick-ups and there spin-offs that is inherently dangerous, most SUVs are not built this way and the most of the ones you see in ?Thailand are not the kind tested they are merely a pick-up with a station-wagon body.

SUVs in Europe and USA tend to be far more sophisticated in construction. So when you quote or refer to an SUV from an English test we can be fairly sure they are NOT referring to a Thai style pickup truck.

As for more metal well one can't change how you feel but the evidence shows that it is how the metal behaves that is most important.

BTW assuminig that a pickup has "more metal" is also a very dodgey assumption.

Size with pickups is an illusion - do you mean volume or mass? and that size is important is a myth....it's what you do with it that is important - didn't anyone tell you that?

now I have spent a lot of time looking into road safety and car construction for a few decades as part of my job and I'm not going into long-winded explanations as to why pick-ups are inherently more dangerous than most other 4 wheel vehicles but the evidence is their for anyone who cares to look but FIRST decide what you are looking at and don't get confused with a G-wagon or 4dr pickup as opposed to a purpose designed SUV or even some off-roaders. Look at the construction then look at saftey features - both ACTIVE and PASSIVE and then rely on a little more than a quick wizz thru Google to back up your arguments.

when you look at crash tests - look at the vehicle they are testing look at the country, check the road and manufacturing regulatoins etc etc

you will also notice that if you collide with someone it involves them colliding with you ...there is no choice in that.....also many incidents occur without contact ewith another vehicle - so which woiuld you rather be in the truck or the house/tree/armco/bottom of a cliff?.....remember you're traveling at the same speed as the vehicle and have to stop too - this includes all your internal organs i'e' brain..........now go and eat some more yellow snow and the brown snow too if you like.

I'm not sure what data there is available on crash tests for vehicles made in Thailand, but there is a TON of data available for those vehicles made in the USA. According to www.safercar.org, Cars are the safest in terms rollover accidents, followed by vans, pickups and SUV's. Driving along the highways in Florida, rollovers were almost always a Ford Explorer or something similar. As for non-rollover wrecks, the SUV's MAY be safer due to their greater weight/height advantages. However, if you're hit on the side, not many vehicles will offer you much protection. "Side impact" airbags, in the words of a driving instructor, are "designed to make you comfortable when you're getting crushed to death". With vehicles being so "tinny" these days, you need all those airbags! :o

Funnily, I was looking at pick ups yesterday and remembered this old thread. 

I currently have a Mazda CX3 but thinking of giving it to my daughter and wife to use. A much safer car for them. Of course, on long drives I'd take the good car. 

I do a lot of DIY and gardening these days, and a second hand pick up would be a useful addition to my 'fleet'.
