can peeps shed some light on this for me?

...as i understood it u can't export any "antique" budha statue

i was led to believe if u bought a budha in thailand you could bring it home as long as it wasn't antique

any1??

It is against the law to take any images of Buddha out of the country, However if it is being worn as personal jewelry they tend to turn a blind eye. They are a lot stricter on antique relics including images of Buddha.

No law against taking them into the country that I am aware of.

But I've had no trouble taking obvious cheap touristy buddha stuff out.

I'd heard it was supposed to be to stop the images being treated with disrespect. The rule also applies to bodhisatva images.

How much hassle is it for a (Buddhist) Thai to get a permit to take a new image or two out of Thailand for domestic use? I did a quick Internet check and got totally confused.

It would seem that you are not allowed to export the images as primary vehicle safety devices, though I had the impression that that was a major use in Thailand. (I may be getting confused with images of monks.)
