Good Guest House/hotel Recomendations

Will be doing a drive tour up to Maesai this next week and planning a night in Maesai, then on to the Maekong river. Can anyone offer any suggestions for mid range [500 to 900THB] clean, quiet in Maesai and good river views on Maekong?? bungaloo, guest house or hotel.

And I assume that reservations would not be a problem during mid week??

Thanks in advance

I have yet to find anywhere nice to stay or eat in Mae Sai.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good restaurant there?

It's a very busy border town and a quiet hotel may be hard to find.

Mekong river; Had some friends try the De River hotel, halfway between Chiang Saen and Golden Triangle. Looked a pretty good place but they had problems sleeping due to the karaoke on the other side of the river.

You could try Viang Yonok Hotel at Chiang Saen lake. We're a little over your price range.

We're in a quiet area, in a beautiful location next to the lake. We have swimming pool, a selection of bicycles and kayaks for trips on the lake, no rental charges.

22 x 5 star reviews on Tripadvisor and #1 hotel in Chiang Saen. Check us out on the web.

Reservations shouldn't be be a problem anywhere now the high season is over, but a phone call would make sure.

I always stay at the Piyaporn Hotel in Mae Sai.

Yup, it is big, modern, and a bit sterile.

However it is impeccably clean, has better than nice rooms (marble bathroom, cable TV, king sized bed) and at 800 THB (with breakfast buffet included) is good value for money. Get a room in the back wing, overlooking the back parking lot. Great view, and quiet.

I have a Thai friend, a doctor, who runs a clinic in Mae Sai in addition to his main clinic in CM. His family owns another major hotel in Mae Sai (starts with a "T"). He can stay at his family's hotel for free- but he always goes to the Piyaporn. 'Nuff said.

As for restaurants, the one on the main street, next to the Chinese temple, is quite good, for a sit down kind of place. Lots of Lanna specialties.

And for the hungry man, Mr. Boyd's moo kata (sukiyaki) all you can eat for 89 B (heading south out of town on main road, about 3 km from border) is hard to beat. And of course about a million food stall vendors all over the town. In the main market area I had some very good Indian and Burmese food as well.

Hope this helps, and have a great trip!

My favourite in Mae Sai the Umporn Resort

A bit out of town, south - between Tesco Lotus & the bus station, but if you have transport no problem.

They have nice bungalows, a good restaurant with light music. Plus it's not far from the Fai Kham Country Pub just down the road later on.

I can thoroughly recommend Ian's place, Viang Yonok, outside Chaeng Saen on the lake.

My man and I went up there for 4 days last year before a planned trip to Chang Mai, and ened up spending the whole 2 weeks there. Was heavenly.

They have 6 or so lovely, individually finished bungalows set amongst a garden style area overlooking the lake.

There is also a separate gym bungalow, and the open air restaurant is lovely. We accompanied Ian into Chang Rai for the purchase of the new big flat screen tv mounted on the wall, and tested it out during the rest of our stay (2 thumbs up). They had a good selection of dvds too.

Ian's (Thai) mother in-law does the cooking and is an awesome cook. Her breakfast pancakes are easily the best I have ever had anywhere, with a selection of the days best fruit. The northern stye noodle soup was another favourite. We quite often went into town with her when she went to the market. Other days we went for drives around the region on the motorcycle they had there - although the mountains were a bit of a struggle for the bike with me on the back of it, so we took a rip to Doi Tung and the Burmese border with the Viang Yonok driver, Songkran (who also took us to and from the airport).

The pool was wonderful too, nice to relax and totally unwind and let your mind dissolve into the gorgeous view over the lake.

My boyfriend wants us to go back again this year again, and we might just do that, as was one of the most relaxing holidays I have ever had.
