The question is ..... should ,or rather ,must, she go and renewed her passport. ..... the problem is the passport has expired .... would there be a problem with that?

Of course there will be problem and of course she will have to renew it.

You haven't said what nationality she is or what country she is in, that might help get some advice.

She should apply for a new passport at the Thai embassy or extend her passport if possible.

Consequence depend on the country he is staying.

I think she is in Singapore ,if I remember correctly ...... We never meet for so long and I don't know where exactly she is studying.

She has this card called student pass and it will only expire in 2012 .....but the passport has expired.

OK ..... here comes problem ...... the process take 4 weeks ............. but her passport already expired .......

She should go to the local Thai Embassy or Consulate and get a new passport. She needs to keep the old one as it has her student visa in it. As long as the visa is still valid and she has complied with the conditions (ie she hasn't overstayed or stopped being a student) then it will still be valid as long as she keeps the two passports together.
