hi, right now i am a 17 year old falang, i have been living in thailand for over 16 years, i am pure french and i do not have the thai nationality yet... its probably going to take another couple of years for me to get the nationality so forget about it...

i am now in a bad situation, i have failed university but passed my high school, i am now looking for a job in pattaya,

here are my questions

firstly

do you think i can work with just my high school diploma? as thais can`

some people say that ill get caught by the police and sent back to my country. is that true?

i really dont care what job ill do except if it involves prostitution...

but im thinking of something like homepro at day time and something like waiter in a bar at night, basically double jobs and have my own room, which i could afford,

discuss please. ill try and be as active as i can on this topic.

please answer or pm me

How old are you again?

first sentence, 17 turning 18 this year

Yeah, I actually noticed.

Thought maybe you had written it wrong, since you said you failed university.

I take it you are not on good terms with your parents?

They do have legal obligations to you until you are 18, so how about getting them to pay for that room while you study for university next year?

ok here is the thing guys,

i lost my mother couple of years ago, i was young but it still damaged me...

about university, i finished high school when i was 16, therefore i joined university at the end of the age of 16, i failed my first year of university..

i am also in a bad relationship with my father and uncle which both live in thailand.

my father is thinking to put me into university once again, but it has been 4 years which i have been wasting his money on education, but luckily i passeed highschool.

and now i want to take my resposibimities and stop studying because wasting my fathers money is bad, and i have problems on concentrating on studies, i hate studying, but i like working adn i trully think that i should start working even though i am only 17, a easy job with like 10k per month would be greatly enough, i also like riding a motorbike, i am also pretty good at it, which can help my in jobs, i have 3 languages. thats also a PLUS..

but as a pure falang, could i work here in thailand freely?

Sorry to say, but no you can’t, unless you have a skill that is required in Thailand, a job that an average Thai cannot do, such as an English language teacher, engineer, Western chef.

When you quote, as a pure Farang, I take it you mean as a Westerner who does not have Thai citizenship.

Many jobs in Thailand are off limits to male Farangs, they fall under the prohibited professions to Westerners ACT.

For ex-pat females married to Thais the rules are different, but I guess you are male.

You certainly would not be able to work in HomePro or any similar occupations.

Also for earnings with a minimum of 10000 baht per month, most employers these days are insisting on their employees having some sort of educational qualification, such as a Bachelors degree or Masters degree which means having studied in a university for at least 4 years.

Being able to ride a motorcycle does not make you unique and holds no worth in Thailand as mostly all young people here use them. This will not increase your chances of a better higher paid job.

Also I believe that once you reach the age of 18, you must apply for a non Immigrant visa each year. You should check with Immigration and enquire about your Immigration status in Thailand.

You could try for Thai citizenship if you can speak, read & write Thai fluently, or as it was your parents who brought you here, than surely it is now your father’s responsibility to support you until some sort of opportunity arises that enables you to be able to support yourself.

Wishing you all success for the future and please keep us informed of your progress.

The fact is, this isn't a country where someone can easily get a good job by on a small amount of education. With this economy even a BA means very little on the job market, even the graduates are struggling for jobs.

Not everyone is lucky enough to get a successful job without collage. Collage is like a "opening more opportunities" for life. So the better the education you have, the “better odd” you'll have it. And it's not just about money, it's also hire-ability and job security. If a company has to downsize, they're most likely to cut the kid with the highschool diploma as opposed the the person with the BA.

In the long run you may come to regret it if you don’t have the higher education under your belt. so I would suggest to invest in yourself now, while you still have the financial mean to do so. Just think long and hard/consult with others of what can you see yourself doing in 5-10 years to come.

Don’t throw away your long term prospects/opportunities…with your short term thinking.

Best of Luck

oh thanks guys, but i really feel that keep on studying would actually waste time/money, i know i am still young but i think i would still better off working...

i know i need a work permit, which is expensive right? so i need a good educational level to bring to the company a good profit out of my labour, for them to give me a work permit.... right?

That about sums it up.

If you are fluent in French and Thai, you might get a job at your embassy??

Worth checking out.

I feel for you. A couple of years ago I tried to employ a keen-enthusiastic young lad(half British half Indonesian, who had lived all but 6 month of his life here), he hated school, but had a practical side to him I thought would benefit my operations. As we were BOI, the rules were tough. At 17 and without a university degree it was literally impossible. We gave up in the end trying to find out something for him to do.

Your language is your skill.

What I recommend is looking at smaller jobs like being a tour guide for French/Swiss or Belgium tourists. This is not likely to be legal, unless the tour company could wrangle a work permit. The main thing is to not upset any of the Thai staff, if you are reported and caught then it's immigration jail. I cant think of any other!!

"You are 17, you've done Thailand - Go do France."

I think this is the best advice, there are no legal prospects here as others have said.

In France and being multilingual you should be "quids in"

but....no matter how badly you felt about your previous studies, you MUST study again

As a 17 year old I gave up when baffled by 2pi radians.

As a young father and seeing very bleak prospects, started night school...took many years but well,

many have said to me, "You are very lucky...considering my job/benefits".

I say "Yeah, I was hanging around the pub and a guy came up and asked me if I would like to travel the

world and get good money..legally....yeah SO LUCKY"

When I see people importuning the spirits for luck, I entitle myself to a wry smile.

This is perfect advise. Advise that I try to follow whenever I can. Go hang around the pub and it will all work out. :o

You have been here 17 years and you dont know the laws of Thailand, most weird????

The real legal law, not unwritten rules that one can experience and equip over 16 years in life.

Taking into account with his loss of mother (not to mention the broken relationship with his father) and assuming he has been going through a hard time, I don't think that is weird.

To OP, I really feel something for you. I understand that a pair of shoes may fit one, it may not for others. But in the long term, you might regret what you missed in the past. As many already said before, do consider again your time investing in study or something that can route to a decent job rather than just a bare hand. The most important thing is to figure out what you like and your chance to pursue it. Say, after 17 years done Thailand, go France now, could be a serious idea ( I assume you still have someone back in France could offer you a shelter). For instance, learn cooking in France if you hate to memorize pi radius. You have such a valuable asset of 3 languages which many others do not have at your age.

"En passant"

Just returned from Lotus and realised that my life turned on the length of a queue.

Normally if a queue is too long, I abandon my shopping or quest.

So sixty years ago, thought I'd go to evening classes. Joined a queue of lads joking and shoving and larking about to enrol "City and Guilds Toolmaking". Saw a shorter queue with only two Asian guys in it.

Joined that queue, I wasn't really going to study when the winter came anyway.

"What is your name", the lecturer said to one of the guys

"Nashnul Stiffkut"

Where do you live ""Nashnul Stiffkut"

Every question met with the same answer.

The lecturer delighted to have ANY prospective students for his overtime, duly enrolled them, and me.

At the first class, maybe a dozen of us. The lecturer said, this is a Five year course, most of you will drop out,or repeat every year, only 8 people in a 100 do it in 5 years.

My workmates derided me, so needless to say I never missed an evening for the next 5 years.

I recall waiting for lectures outside "Applied Mechanics" and longingly looking at the door "Advanced

Applied Mechanics"..what an incentive.

This was just the beginning, I like the analogy of what you know being the volume of a sphere, and the greater the sphere the greater the surface area exposed to what you don't know.

Bad relations with father ?..I put mine in hospital.

People aren't and should not be concerned about poor relationships et al...imagine survivors of Dachau they got on with it.

They only care "What can you do?"

Unbelievably after I moved on to a Multi-national company, I was sent back to where I worked previously on engineering buy-off.

There were much smarter guys than me still working there, not unhappy or envious, but having few options.

I doubt if this is much help to the OP. If I were him I would see myself with Interpol at least.

I always vowed never to talk about the past but look to the future..I have failed I guess.

Be advised that you can no longer have a extension of stay as dependent of your father when you turn 18.

You must start to look at options for visa also.

OP is "pure French" (what ever that means - strong French culturale influence in the home), been here nearly all his life, bright enough get through school with grades good enough to go to Uni, bright enough to write English like a first language (presume the other 2 are Thai and French - which is the so-called first language?) - all this by the age of 16? - then messed up real bad (?)

What is your current legal status in Thailand - here on one or other visa or have permanent residence status?

Posted

Well, it's not so hard for whomever wrote in another language, French I presume, to just send the boy a private message. Easy to do.

To headshotclan, I suggest you get any papers you need and get work on a big boat such as a freight boat and sail the world going from port to port. That's what I'd want to do if I were you, as now I feel too old to just take off and do that for a few years, but oh how I'd love to do so.

if you are any good at CS (your name suggests), try to get sponsored

wow your good... yeah but its still hard to get sponsored alone, you need a team to be real pro..but now im better at dota...i could have ab tter chance to get sponsored at dota than cs..

anyways ..

so basically jobs for me at this age without a work permit is fcked up right?

ok then..

i talked to my father and i think we found a pretty good solution.

6 month ago i applied for abac university in bkk humark, and i like using computers and i love graphic designs, doing pictures and advertising, but my father at that time he said that after i graduate with graphic design diploma, i would get jobs but still hard money jobs, liek there is too many people doing graphic designign around the word. so i chose to do business, and thought in the futur i could buy up a hotel or even manage a hotel, i could work in tourism companies and witht the languages it would help me loads.

but after a whole trimest of business, i hate it. and i told my father that, and he strongly suggests that i should stop studing, he basically told me what yall said, that without a certificate of anykind, a job for a alien is impossible.

so we thought of me doing once again abac, but on communication arts, which is computer based arts. i think that is a solution, if so, i will be in bangna, as of me wanting to be independant from all the husstle, he said i could share a room with someone, if i can find a lapptop somewhere for my use, do you think i ould work online as also studying during day time?

thanks guys, and dont stop giving me advices, i love reading and i feel the love from you guys, thanks alot, if you got anything pm me please.

i was also thinking of going back to france, yes i do have shelter over there, but if i go to france, i wont have a good futur as if i continued studing here.

i also thought of joining the army in france, but hey its hard job, so i think i rather study or work here.

Posted

yeah, i hate to say it, because its cliche, but yeah try to get any certifications/degree/school you can. it will open doors that are now closed. Just do what you can to pass, because obviously you aren't a big fan of studying.

If you find three more decent players, let me know, because I play dota fairly competitively. BUT DONT LET IT STOP YOU FROM GOING TO SCHOOL
