Xp Auto Update Question

Featured Replies

Hi,

Usually I get updates and they show as a yellow icon with '!' in it in the task bar.

(Setting: download but let me decicide when and what to install - never any problem)

Two days ago I got this screen (without any icon showing up!!!) when I shut down the PCs:

I know that this screen comes up if I do not install updates but usually I also have the yellow icon which is not the case this time.

Questions:

1. could this be a fake update not originating from M$?

and

2. how can I find out what will be installed?

If the icon is available I can check what will be installed and use custom install but without icon I'm reluctant to let the install run.

What would be the best and safest way to proceed?

Got the same issue yesterday I also use "let me decide" option. The option wasn' offered here but i just clicked shutdown to installl. Seems to be the KB958690 and KB960225 updates. Everything seems fine.

It can indicate of an update gone wrong and you are reminded of a pending update.

I pushed the button and everything went fine.

I have my security updates set to notify me of any updates without doing anything else. I can then look at everything they are offering me, and decide what I want to install before anything is downloaded. Usually, after I check and approve what I want downloaded and installed, the notification icon will show that it is being downloaded, and when it is done I can click on it to install. This month was different that usual. After I approved the download and installation, the notification icon disappeared and never reappeared. It wasn't until the next day when I went to shut down the computer did I see the same as your shut down screen for installing the updates. I wonder if MS has decided to do something different with the way they do their automatic security updates?

Just googled the two above mentioned updates and it appears there are quite a few problems with them.

From what I found it appears that they are for WIN7Beta, Vista and XP64 but I have XP32

how can I kill them since I don't have the notification icon?

I have seen this a number of times. I figured it had downloaded the updates, the little shield showed the downloading, and installed them at shut down rather than forcing you to reboot. I have had no problems with it and prefer that it installs updates at shut down.

You can disable the update on shut down notification. It works at least with xp professional.

Click Start -> Run

Type gpedit.msc <Enter>

--> “User Configuration” --> click “Administrative Templates”

A list of items will show up.

click on “Windows Components”

click on “Windows Update”

click on “Do not display ‘Install Updates and Shutdown’ option in Shut Down Windows dialog box”

Select “Enabled” and click OK

Close Group Policy window.

Done

Thank you very much for this info. I was not aware of this possibility. Will certainly disable it.

Just now, about 20 min ago, I did get the notification icon on two PCs. It now shows three pending updates:

It could be that the first douwnload did not complete and - hence - no icon.

Just did what 'webfact' suggested and it works very well.

I won't be bothered about pending updates at shutdown time anymore.

I do install most of what M$ suggests but usually wait for 3-5 days to see if there are any negative posts about any particular update.
