My current UK passport is full and I need a new one and after I will need a new visa to re enter Thailand, does anyone know how long it takes to get a new passport from the British embassy in Vientiane? Also any other useful information would be great based on experience.

Thanks.

There is no British embassy in Laos. Affairs are handled by the embassy in Bangkok. UK nationals in difficulty in Laos should contact the Australian embassy. I don't think this would extend to issuing passports, though.

As far as I know there is no British embassy in Vientianne. The embassy in Thailand has responsibility for Laos. There used to be a British trade representative on contract based in Vientianne but not sure if he is still there. Suggest you find some way of getting a new passport in Bangkok. Or you could try Hanoi where I got a new UK passport about 5 years ago, takes about a week (and even let you keep the old one).

insisongkran, you had better get a move on either way,as the Embassy will be shut on Mon 6th for Chakri Day,and again from the 11th-15th for Songkran.

So there is not much of a window for getting much done,as i think it takes about 5-7 working days for the new passport.

Official line is 10 WORKING days for a new UK PP. Got mine in Delhi last year in a very creditable 5 days :o

:D Well the title gave me a giggle anyway! :D

Only 35 years late I believe for the British Embassy . . . however I would REALLY like it if they could be arsed to establish an embassy or at least a consulate here so I don't have deal with the retards that work at the Bangkok embassy for everything. Let alone having to travel to the bloody place for visas for my wife. :o

I just renewed my passport at the British Embassy in Bangkok.

It was a straight forward renewal, no problems, no comebacks etc. and it took three weeks and three days.

So be warned.

Mine took 7 days going in person.

But if you phone them, they will send you an application form and you can do it all by post, although this will take a little longer!

My own experience with British Embassy in Bangkok is good. I have dealt with them for renewal of two passports and registration of two births. Always polite and helpful.

Each time I have been, I saw at least one distraught father begging for help fighting custody for half Thai children. Also people who had run out of money, or got themselves in a hole. Also plenty of older men with younger Thai women applying for visas.

I have every sympathy for peoples troubles, but clearly everyday the staff are dealing with the emotionally unbalanced, the unfortunate (or stupid), and the deluded. Every day. All the time.

Day after day. Endless streams of them.

I don't know about you, but I reckon at some point I would want to throttle everyone and tell them to wake up.

I have just been to the BKK Brit consulate and I have to return on Monday 6th for a pick-up, so I can confirm that they are open on Monday. A notice on the wall states that they require 10 working days for a new passport. .... and they are closed for I think 4 days over Songkran/Easter.
