somluck
All the political drama plays out like a low budget Thai TV Soap.....This is their country (Thai people), while we as westerners may regard the political system here as a Banana Republic.... It is Thier country, and it is only our perception of "normal" that dirrers. Maybe it is time to abbolish the elected governments and reurn to Absolute Monarchy Rule. That's a great idea....Thaksin (ex thailand's richest man) gave it a shot......perhaps now it's the world richest man's turn to give it a shot
Lami
No flights out ?! security wise they could n't organise a piss up in a brewery Nor a (......) in Pattaya! Or is it that they are experts in just such occasions of disarray ?! News of this in papers around the world! I've found it somewhat amusing that a conference of world leaders should eventually have been shunted off to Pattaya, I must admit. That's more than a little embarrassing in itself. Perhaps it is better for Thailand that the leaders, their entourages and the world press don't spend too long there. All the same, I believe we should not trivialize the Thais' struggle towards improvement. Edited April 11, 2009 by Lami

Acharn
And as I said in the other thread, make you rethink if the army was indeed siding with yellows last time. There is actually a real possibility that they are just incompetent. Well, that's certainly possible. Most senior officers are businessmen, not soldiers. On the other hand I keep thinking of the Reichstag Fire. I don't trust anything The Nation prints, so this story doesn't gain much traction with me. I suspect the Army is trying to provoke incidents that will give them justification to impose martial law on the whole country, so they can have an "election" which will get rid of the pesky Red Shirts forever (or at least for a couple of years) by preventing them from running. We already have the high command talking about sending "education teams" to villages in the North and Northeast to promote the Democrats. I have to say, though, that I think the Red Shirt leadership made a bad mistake in deciding to shut down this meeting.

Acharn
Don't worry, everything will be okay, an updated list of police transferred to inactive posts is being drawn up right now.Have the government decided water cannon won't work in Thailand due to some immunity gained over generations of participating in songkran? I don't understand that with the inactive posts? I would love to be at an inactive post with full salary.... We doesn't change the government simply their area for which they are responsible, for example Yala, Naratiwat have less policeman than needed. No, you're not thinking it through. The salary is a tiny fraction of what they are able to get when they are in a powerful post. Getting put in an inactive post means you don't have the resources to carry out your extortion. So better hope they keep it up for a month or so, this would pay for an airfare If not, can always go rob a bank, as long as have enough people to surround the cops
mangostays
I have to ask a question that's been bugging me for some time now. The Thai's see us Falangs (they will never capitalize this word) as money only! They tolerate our presence at best for reasons I'm sure we are all (as guests) well aware of. Throughout this "circus act" over the last couple of years I have to wonder when the Thai's attention will turn to us. How and more importantly WILL the government be able to control the spit roasting and consuming of tasty falang flesh?Joking aside... for me this is a serious matter. My children are half Thai and I now consider this my "home" (I still have an emotional bag packed just in case ... and who hasn't with this farce of control?) Any thoughts people? This is a serious concern of mine too. All Thailand needs is another Mugabe in the driving seat and they'll be tearing up our gardens and lynching us in the street. Anti foreign sentiment runs deep in Thailand, it's no secret that many Thais on all social levels secretly/openly despise the Farang and would like nothing more than take back all the land they sold us a few years ago and stick the boot in. It's bloody obvious that the police and army support the reds, and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to work out that Thaksin paid for this with his own money and the promise of favor to the few upon his return. Shocking <deleted> really. Does Thailand really beleive that the tourists will keep comming and the business men keep investing if this horrible mess continues? Scarily, I beleive that this is exactly what Thailand believes, only when the money stops flowing into the country will the reality sink in, except that the Thais won't see them selves as the ones to blame. And that's when they turn on us.

And that's when they turn on us. Yes.... This is a fear of mine that’s been growing legs and sprinting for some time now. I certainly don’t feel as though my original post was an overreaction to the present state of affairs just an observation of sorts. When I first moved to Thailand I felt enamoured and humbled by the welcome given by the Thai People as I’m sure many of us do. However... my rose coloured specs are off now and I have to say ..... I'm more than a little concerned for the well being of my family in the long term. My children look Falang which adds to my concerns. A little off point and covered many times before but........since arriving here a few years ago, I’ve had to adjust my fairly pleasant driving style (fast but courteous) to that of 99% of Thai drivers (@@@@@@@ @@@@@@@). I mentioned my escalating irritation and differences in the Thai’s once behind the wheel .... he said and I quote “Thai people are wonderfully accommodating and humble face to face however behind the wheel of a car, their true personality shines through”..... Bang on for many IMO!! No disrespect intended but...they are certainly not the people I fell in love with 10 years ago. Luckily my wife is of a different mentality but even she shrugs her shoulders and plays distant observer......Mai pen Rai krup!

Artabus
i had a feeling this was going to happen back in December. Occupy an aiport and get the government out. Occupy a city and get the governemnt out. It could go on forever and it is indeed laughable (if not so serious for Thailand) that all along the way the word "Democracy' is used. I begining to think the word does not tanslate in this country!! It does translate into Thai, only the spelling differs a bit... English : Democracy Thai : Bemorecrazy And no jokes about DAAD needing to be spelt BAAD either

May be this was intended from the start. Now police showed they have no authority or muscle, so therefore give army more power. It was Thaksin who gave police more power, time to take it back. Also now that the red shirts did get so called "violent", and did threaten the security of foreign state leaders, government.army has the right to use all force needed to ensure safety and order in the country-ie use guns which is now justified. Also now Thaksin can be charged with treason, lesse majesty and other charges for which he can be brought back to Thailand and this time get 100 year sentence. We will have to wait and see what would happen in the next 48 hours to know the truth
