not keen on 20 fps in 1080p with only mono sound... will be nowhere near 5D quality in movie mode.

looks like canon's answer to nikon's D90 (which is the better option, imho)

I've been looking at the reviews on the EOS 500D (Rebel T1i) and am impressed considering the much lower cost from the 50D. Uses essentially the same sensor as the 50D.

Imaging-Resource.

Canon

Not sure when it will be available in Thailand and the cost based on USD would be around 32k with a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. Anyone seen one yet and any thoughts relative to other cameras in this price range?

All the reports say "almost the same sensor".............

none seem to define the differences.

Looks good to me......... it would be nice to be able to afford the 5D mkII....and obviously the video isn't going to be as good as the full-frame camera...... but 720i is better than the usual VGA

I was considering a new topic on this for my specific needs and questions but since this one is here will continue.

I've spent several hours reading reviews and specs on the EOS 500d and also comparing it with the close competition, the Nikon D5000. At the moment the Canon is on the top of my list. Fotofile shows the pricing to be 31,500 for the kit which includes the ESF 18-55 IS lens. Body only was 29,900 so a few hundred for a walk about lens I can start getting the feel for using it seems reasonable.

I also like to do long shots and found the Canon EF 70-300 f4/5.6 lens and reviews on it to be quite nice. US prices seems to be about $549.00 dollars and reviews favorable. There were references to it being a "mislabeled L series" due to the quality approaching and some instances exceeding the much more expensive L series.

Couple of issues popped up in the reviews. First, the 500d is a 15Mpixel CMOS sensor and as such any lens quality issues will stand out. I saw comparisons using the kit lens and an L series lens and the differences were significant.

Next, several references to "Live View" on dSLR's not being that useful in the photographing process due to speed. The 500d has a 930,000 pixel LCD view screen and is one of the best. Do others with dSLR only use the view finder for photographing?

Any thoughts or other information on alternate dSLR choices?

I can't speak for the EOS 500D but I find Liveview a great assett on my G10.

The abilty to see all my settings on the screen is invaluable. And seeing a "Live" histogram is truly a Godsend. No more clipped highlights or blocked out shadows, immediate view of exposure adjustments and their effects and a nice little centre square which zooms in 100% for confirmation of focus accuracy. (And I can place it anywhere on the image!)

Conversely, in bright sun I can't always see the entire image and the G10 only shows 75% of the image through a rather tiny viewfinder. IF, the 500D eye level finder is big and 100% then I would say this is ideal (as it is on the 5DMK11)

The 70-300 DO IS USM is good but not in the same league as the 70-200 IS F4 L despite what you may have read. This is the one to get.

15 megapixels will be wasted with that other lens!

Now, with a 1.6x crop you'll be shooting a 112mm-320mm which is a good action/sport/wildlife range - used as such, you'll benefit from good glass. Believe me, it's all about glass.

The 18-55 IS is only a reasonable lens - not pristine glass. The 17-40 L will (and does) destroy it. This is Canons cheapest L and great value. But, for a few hundred dollars - get the 18-55.

After a short while you'll want the 17-40 L and as you've already got (haven't you!) the 70-200 f4 IS L you'll have a superb kit and really ready for a 5DMK11 upgrade !!!!!!!! :)

Get the best glass - rob the kitty or what, but you keep the glass whenever you upgrade.

Good luck - hope this helped (confused) :D

Thanks for your excellent feedback Vulcan.

The Live View is 100% and the viewfinder is 95% vertical - 95% horizontal.

The L series is indeed top stuff but at 2-3 times the price will have to do some serious soul searching on that.

Actually the 18-55 IS being suppled as the kit portion was only a few hundred Baht. Body only 29,900 and with the above lens 31,500. :D Will look more at the L series since I've seen the comparisons between standard and L and the difference is dramatic.

Thanks again. :D
