What Should The Silent Majority Do To End The Crisis?

The defamation laws need to be rewritten to prevent their abuse by politicians.

Thaksin was a master at filing criminal & civil defamation suits against his critics.

I quite agree LooseCannon. Thaksin also used and abused the media to his advantage when he was in office. Now the shoe is on the other foot. What chance has the Thai public of ridding itself of institutional cover ups and smear campaigns when there is a big doubt about its public infomation services.

i don't know how the silent majority can organize a single voice without adopting another primary color shirt ***no royal references please--sbk***

clearly, free and fair elections would be nice but regardless of whoever wins an election, you can be sure the shirts of the opposing side will be 'sak leow' ready for more protests.

And then some others put on some red shirts and joined.. .

Just saw Thaksin on CNN. Even Thaksin is now saying that a peaceful way forward should be sought. (By all parties, so inlcuding the Reds)

He also said the millitary killed many people but they removed the bodies, effectively 'disappearing' them. Photos were shown as well of soldiers firing horizontally, and of killed protesters. ugly ugly ugly. Abhisit can't possibly keep in power as if nothing happened now.

Firing 'into the air' = Live Rounds ~ intended as a warning

Firing 'horizontally' = Blank Rounds ~ intended to cause panic & force reds to withdraw

Think about it folks, they fired really hundreds, or even thousands, of Live rounds there would hundreds of wounded or dead .. absolutely no evidence of that whatsoever.

And there's evidence of only 52 killed in May 1992.

How about writing laws against military coups and airport blockades to unconstitutionally unseat elected politicians too.

Short term as in right now, I don't have the answer. Maybe just joining together and retaking their areas from the mob, be they Red, Yellow or Blue shirts.

Longer term I think the Thais could learn from the non-violent civil disobedience campaigns of Martin Luther King leading American Blacks and Ghandi leading Indians to stand up -peacefully- for their rights.

At the end of the day, its a Thai problem and will only change when ordinary Thais demand the rule of law, honest police, a fair distribution of wealth and transparent government.

Singapore did it, so can the Thais.

As a Singaporean with close ties with Thailand, I can tell you that Thaksin's style of government is actually copied from our leaders. Things worked in Singapore because we have a very large silent majority quite contented with being able to do our shopping, spa treatment and travelling. It doesn't matter that the government controls the media. We read English, travel frequently and have access to information worldwide.

We do have our elite but they don't bother us and we certainly don't worship and aren't afraid of them. Thais are equally pragmatic, but tend to get impulsive and emotional a lot more often than we do.

I was on the train to Penang the next day after the slaughter and met very credible farangs who were there that night and saw thousands of bodies. That number was also reported in the press at the time.

The Suchinda Government, said there were only 52. :o
