One of the red-shirt leaders is in the midst of setting up headquarters abroad from which the red-shirt movement will be run.

Red-shirt leader Jakrapob Penkair, who escaped abroad and went into hiding after an arrest warrant was issued against him, told a foreign journalist that red-shirt people are ready to fight and have the ability to run the movement.

He gave the interview from an undisclosed location after he went into hiding before the rally ended.

He also said that the group will remain underground for as long as they can.

Jakrapob has vowed to continue his anti-government movement and promised to topple the current administration.

He also said he has kept in contact with fugitive former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, but Thaksin is not masterminding his activities.

Visaradee is the only daughter of Visarn Techathirawat, one of the 111 former executives (TRT Banned # 99) of the now disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party who were stripped of their electoral rights for five years for electoral fraud.

At 27, she is only one week older than the youngest female MP in Parliament, Chinnicha Wongsawat (seated on right), who is the daughter of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat (PPP Banned # 5), who as a Party executive is banned for 5 years for electoral fraud.

UDD supporters surrender to police

Nine supporters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) in Chiang Rai turned themselves in to police on Tuesday to face accusations of involvement in protest violence.

Among them was Visarn Techatheerawat, former executive of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party. He was accompanied by his daughter Visaradee, a Chiang Rai MP of the Puea Thai Party.

Visaradee used her position as an MP to post bail for her father.

Thai state of emergency extended by new protest

A fresh rally planned by anti-government protesters will prolong a state of emergency in Thailand's capital Bangkok and surrounding areas, a government minister said Tuesday.

Supporters of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra have announced they will regroup Saturday outside the emergency zone after rallies in Bangkok ended last week following street battles between demonstrators and armed soldiers.

But Satit Wonghnongtaey, the minister attached to the prime minister's office, said the protests in Samut Sakhon province, 36 kilometres (22 miles) outside Bangkok would worsen the kingdom's political chaos.

"The government is ready to deal with any chaos, but the rally will affect the government's decision when to lift the state of emergency," Satit told reporters.

"This is bad news for our country because it will worsen the crisis. They (Thaksin's supporters) should rely on parliament as the government is implementing charter amendments as demanded by the protesters," he said.

On Monday Jakrapob Penkair, a senior member of the so-called "Red Shirt" protest movement loyal to fugitive Thaksin, told AFP from exile that the group would continue their campaign against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

"We have developed some strategies," Jakrapob told AFP in a telephone call diverted by an assistant to avoid detection.

The Red Shirts shut down an Asian summit in the beach resort of Pattaya on April 11 and then clashed with troops in Bangkok on Monday. Two people were killed and 123 injured in the unrest in the capital.

The Red Shirts want Abhisit to quit and call elections, saying that he came to power unfairly in December after a court toppled Thaksin's allies from power.

Army: State of emergency still needed

The Permanent Secretary for Defence, Gen Apichart Penkitti, believed there are underground movements aimed at inciting unrest, and that the state of emergency should still be enforced in Bangkok and nearby provinces.

Gen Apichart said the army would like the Emergency Decree to be lifted quickly as many sides wanted. However, high-ranking army officials held a meeting and resolved that the situation had yet to stabilise.

He said the decree is still imposed to deal with the anti-government core members who have yet to turn themselves in to authorities.

UDD core-leaders in Chiang Mai surrender to police

Two core-leaders of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) reportedly turned themselves in at Lamphun Police Station on Tuesday (April 21) to face charge over involvement in protest violence.

The source said the accused were identified as Lamphun Pheua Thai Party MP Sathaporn Maneerat and Chiang Mai 51 core-leader Phetchawat Wattanaphongsiri.

It was reported that a group of UDD supporters showed up at the police station to give moral support to their leaders and as well the attorneys submitted the documents to post the bails for their clients.

Rumours fester among Bangkok red shirts as emergency decree continues

One week after Thai soldiers clashed with rioting pro-democracy “red shirt” protesters on the streets of Bangkok the country is still governed under the state of emergency decree imposed by Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

The emergency declaration bans gatherings of more than five people for political purposes, censors news reports considered threatening to public order, and allows for the use of the Thai military to quell unrest.

Claims that the Thai army only fired over the heads of red shirt protesters is reputed by this photo clearly showing soldiers at Pratunam taking aim. Note also that those soldiers taking aim have a khaki bag at their waist that the soldiers in front do not have.

While the majority of those foreign tourists who have continued with their holiday despite the battle for Bangkok last week would hardly notice, armed Thai soldiers and police with riot shields remain stationed at strategic locations around Bangkok, particularly in the area around Government House.

As the Government attempts an all out round-up of almost the entire red shirt leadership, the law that brought stability to Bangkok and put an end to the anarchy could now be doing more harm than good.

But it is quite amazing that they can be charged within 24 hours whilst the leaders of an arguably larger protest, the yellows, still have not been charged at all for taking over three International airports. I wonder if this is what is behind the absolute division in this country and until both sides are treated equally by the police and judiciary, rich poor or otherwise, is there any chance for Thailand to reach its potential?

Samut Sakhon Governor Weerayuth Eimaumpha revealed that measures had been prepared to deal with the UDD protesters who had publicly announced to hold their major rally in front of the city hall, ensuring that the demonstration would be in accordance with the law.

Mr. Weerayuth asserted yesterday (April 21) that the local administrative council had measures prepared to deal with the UDD’s major demonstration which was scheduled to be held on April 25.

He also added that he could not authorize UDD protesters to use the city hall and its compounds as their rally ground as requested. PAD protesters were also previously refused to use the areas by the Governor during their protests.

If the government did sanction killings and bodies were carted away then it is the end of the Dems. However, where is the proof? In today's age of technology, where EVERYTHING is caught on camera and video, I find it astounding that not one clip can be found to proove that this incident happened. So until they have proof, people should stop speculating on rumours. I am listening to the parliamentary debates right now and the Phua Thai are simply repeating these unfounded allegations. It's annoying. Non constructive and a waste of time when they should be looking at facts and focusing on reconciliation. As to the question of the PAD, three out of the four cases - 1 Suvarnabhumi, 2 Don Muang 3 Government House and the fourth I can't remember, three have now finished investigatoin and been handed to the court. These crimes will be persecuted. Or had better be anyway.

He is neither an official, nor a politician. He is a wanted fugitive from justice, talking about supporting an armed insurrection against the lawful government of Thailand. Surely any comment on that person's lack of character would be considered reasonable? lol

One of the most outspoken red shirted leader, Jakrapob managed to escape overseas after the army broke up the mass protests in Bangkok a week ago.

Speaking to the BBC from in hiding, he said the movement would use different tactics to confront the government, including possible armed attacks.

"I believe the room for unarmed and non-violent means to resolve Thailand's problem is getting smaller every day," he told BBC.

The sudden end of the red-shirt protests last week has left the movement in disarray.

Five of the organisers have been arrested and are being held under the emergency decree, which is still in effect.

Speaking by phone from an undisclosed location, he told the BBC that the struggle to bring down the current government would continue, but that they would no longer rely on conventional forms of protest.

"The state of emergency is a big help. It puts people underground. I believe the room for unarmed and non-violent means to resolve Thailand's problem is getting smaller every day," he said.

It can be done in Cambodia or anywhere else.

If you can't read any numbers on the truck and can't see buildings well it would be impossible to proof that it is not true (always difficult to proof that something did NOT happen).

Having read Mr Le Fevre's blog on a number of occasions now, I believe that as a journalist he makes a good disc jockey.

For example, "the country" (Thailand) is not under a state of emergency - it is Bangkok and surrounding areas. And perhaps in the south due to entirely different events.

I am still waiting for his answer to my question as to how he estimated several hundred thousand red shirts in the streets of Bangkok a couple of weeks ago - and then virtually challenged TV readers to prove him wrong
