I just heard on BBC breaking news that the Government have issued arrest warrants for 14 Red shirt leaders and also Khun Thaksin. It will be interesting to see what happens.

By the way i can't find anything on the BBC web site regarding the above.

Cheers, Rick

Thai court issues warrants for protest leaders

BANGKOK: -- A Bangkok court has issued arrest warrants for 14 protest leaders, including deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who is in exile.

Metropolitan police spokesman Suporn Pansua said the arrest warrants issued Tuesday charge them with inciting a public disturbance and illegal assembly.

Demonstrations that plunged the Thai capital into chaos were called off earlier in the day by protest leaders. But not before rioting and clashes left two dead and more than 120 injured. Several leaders are already in police custody.

Thaksin fled the country last year before a court convicted him in absentia of violating a conflict of interest law. He addressed the crowd of protesters via video nearly every evening since the latest round of protests began on March 26.

Arrest warrants issued for Thaksin and 13 other protest leaders

Arrest warrants have been issued for Thaksin and 13 other pro-Thaksin United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leaders for violating the state of emergency, which forbids gatherings of more than five people for political reasons.

That the leaders have been charged is good news, as should anyone found causing damage to private or public property in Bangkok and Pattaya during this time.

But it is quite amazing that they can be charged within 24 hours whilst the leaders of an arguably larger protest, the yellows, still have not been charged at all for taking over three International airports. I wonder if this is what is behind the absolute division in this country and until both sides are treated equally by the police and judiciary, rich poor or otherwise, is there any chance for Thailand to reach its potential?

Abhisit must make a firm and clear decision on this if he expects his "reconcilliatory" approach and "all people are equal in the eyes of the law" to be taken seriously.

Along with his assurances to international leaders that they would be secure for the ASEAN summit - Abhisits words and promises are sounding increasingly hollow.

Agreed both sides Pad and Redshirt leaders should be on trial . Propagander from either side should not be allowed apart from some limited and controlled air time . TV stations should not be controlled by one side or the other .

Unless it is seen by the whole of Thailand that all sides are treated the same there will never be a solution .

At least Thaskin is consistant

He left his friend when he fled the country to take the heat when the court case found him guilty

This time he promised to lead them to victory, but again left his friends to take the heat this time as well

Yes the PAD are also guilty

But it seems they did not set Bangkok on fire or turn on their own people

So I guess fair is fair, and all my take the same end

Face the courts and see what is the decision

The yellows are charged and reported to the police on 30. March. Now waiting for the court.

Just a question: What is this about separation of power? Legislative, Executive and Judicial? Is it Abhisit's fault if no court has issued arrest warrants for the PAD leaders or do you guys suggest Abhisit should take influence on the courts?

Critics are justified but to the right people, please.

The military are firmly on the side of the yellows and the military controls the country--they act when they want to act. When it comes to acting against the reds, they did so. Abhisit is merely a puppet--and that is becoming clearer all the time. He's a nice puppet, a smart puppet and a well educated puppet--but a puppet none-the-less.

Abhisit is losing any credibility now, especially internationally. He's proved Thaksin's point, that he didn't move to prosecute the PAD (yellow shirts) when they seized the airports and lived in government house for months. The UDD (red shirts) never even entered government house.

Now that the protesters have gone home, we all have a clearer view of the puppet show that is going on behind.

This isn't the end. This is the beginning ...of the end.

He is a poppet.

Hansum man. He reminds me of 'Captain Scarlet' .....with those expressive eyebrows

Captain Scarlet was no puppet* - he was indestructible

......*Except in the strictly literal sense.

I would think that a PM would have enough power to have an arrest warrant issued for someone that occupied the government house for 5 months and the airports for a week, no?

But then again, you can't prosecute those who made you PM, that would be treason.

Just when Abhisit's popularity is back on the rise and public sentiment towards the red shirts and Thaksin - in Bangkok at the very least - is pretty much on the floor, the forum is covered in posts stating the exact opposite.

Now why does that seem to happen?

You muppets realize that over 19 PAD Leaders had warrents filed for the airport and GH occupation, and they showed up to hear the charges against them about 2 weeks ago?

It was hard to miss, but it makes it hard to whinge, so I can understand if you "Missed" it.

May I suggest you learn the first page about the organisation of a democracy with separation of power before you post here.

Abhisit has earned my admiration for handling the situation, although I would have preferred him to act quicker, i.e. BEFORE the ASEAN Summit in Pattaya.

But besides this, the way he handled the situation here in Bangkok is very good. Nobody got killed except for the two killings done by the Red Shirts and law and order has returned to Bangkok within 24 hours. The leaders are under arrest and the police and the military have not used excessive force like under the Somchai government.

The big looser is Thaksin. The most powerful man 4 years ago has not been able to mobilize more than 10'000 rioters, who just came to Bangkok to have some action and let out some steam. I believe this guy Thaksin is over, finished and out.

Let us not forget that this whole episode is a result of a military invasion of Bkk for which no-one has been charged - and that was a treasonable action which overthrew a democratically elected government in direct violation of the Thai constitution.
