I just finished my taxes, and now I can't figure out how to get them postmarked today because the post office is closed.

Does anyone have any ideas?

If you are a United States citizen or resident alien, who is either: (1) living outside of the United States and Puerto Rico and your main place of business or post of duty is outside of the United States and Puerto Rico; or (2) in military or naval services on duty outside of the United States and Puerto Rico on the due date of your return, you are allowed an automatic 2–month extension until June 15 to file your return and pay any tax due. For additional information refer to Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad. If you use this automatic 2–month extension, you must attach a statement to your return explaining which of the two situations qualify you for the extension. For additional information on extensions, refer to Topic 304, Extensions of Time to File Your Tax Return.

Additional Extension of Time for Taxpayers Out of the Country

All taxpayers are generally entitled to an automatic 6-month extension of time to file their returns by filing Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, also available en español, with the Internal Revenue Service.

In addition to this 6-month extension, taxpayers who are out of the country (as defined in the Form 4868 instructions) can request a discretionary 2-month additional extension of time to file their returns (to December 15 for calendar year taxpayers).

To request this extension, you must send the Internal Revenue Service a letter explaining the reasons why you need the additional 2 months. Send the letter by the extended due date (October 15 for calendar year taxpayers) to the following address:

Internal Revenue Service Center

Austin, TX 73301-0215

USA

You will not receive any notification from the Internal Revenue Service unless your request is denied for being untimely.

The discretionary 2-month additional extension is not available to taxpayers who have an approved extension of time to file on Form 2350 (for U.S. citizens and resident aliens abroad who expect to qualify for special tax treatment).

You can also send from the Airport Post Office which is on Departure Area of Suvarnabhumi Airport and it's open every day.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies, but unfortunately I'm not in Bangkok--I'm in Pattaya.

There's a catch-22 about filing an extension, I believe, and that is you must still send your payment before the 15th, so it works out the same for me.

I've been filing in June for the last 15 years and always have a tax payment to make and not had any problems.

Look up the Tax code on it! You are automatically give 2 months extension being you are filing from outside the country.

Here is the form. Read the instructions. IRS form f4868

I think it's also not a problem, unless he owes them money. If he is getting a refund, I think being late a bit is not an issue, but I'm not sure.

It only takes about an hour or so to use the internet

That's not as simple as it seems. They still have to send some sort of verification to your mailing address,
